Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rachele Royale. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Rachele thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I lost my mother to suicide at a very young age. Learning how to survive that loss, and to navigate the journey of the grief and healing, has truly shaped me as an artist. I have multiple songs (Cold World, Circus Life, Dark Side) that depict the story of rising from the ashes, which will always be a constant theme in my artistry. I am currently producing a show/ podcast titled “Haus of Royale” which will bring artists on to talk about their stories and struggles. This absolutely comes from a place of wanting to heal my own trauma. One of the most rewarding things about being an artist is seeing how the performing arts can heal our pain. Healing together is even better !
Rachele , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My mother, Sioux Lehner, had 3 dance studios in the Bay Area (Mt. View, CA) titled “Dance Attack!”. Sioux had a major career in TV/Film and taught her students ‘old school Hollywood’ professionalism. How to audition, speak, carry yourself. Most of us kids started teaching class at 13/14 years old, as well as auditioning in LA. Growing up in that environment gave me a great foundation as a dancer, actress. However, my mom did not want me to be a singer, ha ! That is probably why I ended up pursuing a music career. I knew I didn’t want to be a tour dancer, and by the time I was 16, dance competition and our home life started to take a toll. Music was my escape and I had the bug to write and record. Senior year of high school I was discovered through Radio Disney and flew to Nashville to record my first EP. Insert super traumatic details here between then and my move to LA. I lost my mother to suicide as I was moving to LA. There was a part of me that just wanted to quit everything completely, but it seemed as if my Mom was spiritually with me, guiding me to keep going. By 2013 I was on the radio with 3 songs playing 11 times a day. The album was produced by Mutt Lange (Shania Twain) and Tony Nilsson. It will always be one of the greatest moments in my career. In my show “Haus of Royale” I will discuss the intricacies of the music industry, including how women are treated, publishing, politics, BS. Mentioning our accolades is great, but the truth is how we make a more healthy, fair environment for artists. I am extremely proud of the music videos, songs on TV/Film, live shows etc. that I have created with so many talented people. Nonetheless, I find so much more peace in contributing to changing the landscape. Working with female producers, teaching writers to create their own publishing companies, being indie and owning your publishing, etc. I still get talked down to, lied to, and hit up for dates from men in showbiz. I’m ready for a new world so that I can actually enjoy the process of creating without the heartbreak !! Let’s get it ladies xo
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I absolutely want to see more female producers, engineers, managers etc. In a 2022 article on musicianwave.com it states that women represent less than 1/3 of artists, 12.6% of songwriters and fewer than 3% of producers that have been on the charts, between the years of 2012 and 2020. I just recently had a song fully produced by a women, and it felt SO powerful. I want to manifest a music team of women. In all industries for that matter !! Growing up watching my mom run successful businesses, yet knowing the pain and struggles she faced is forever deep rooted within my soul. I want all of us women to erase the old narratives and rewrite our story. I also want to see these conversations continue to come to light in the public eye. It has been so healing for me to hear the podcasts, watch the docs, and feel seen with so many women coming forward their stories. I can’t wait to start the “Haus of Royale” show to have these amazing conversations.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Communicating my stories and experiences through music and the performing arts in general, has truly given me a sense of purpose. Helping and encouraging others to share their stories is such a beautiful way to heal our trauma and pain. It’s always so amazing to have people tell you how you’ve inspired them or given them a joy or peace. We all need the magic of music and movies and entertainment to help us survive this wild journey ! I look forward to this new chapter with “Haus of Royale” show to have in depth talks about all the things ! Connection. Communication. Love. That is the reward.
