We recently connected with Rachel Yakar and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rachel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
I started my practice with a colleague who I highly respect. But, due to unforeseen circumstances, she had to move out of town. That left me, on my own. I was crushed at the idea of running my practice independently. I did not think it was something that I wanted to do. However, I decided to keep moving forward and “dive in.” I love the work that I do, and the way I can do it, as a sole provider. I can develop care practices that are aligned with my professional ethos. Some of the key challenges include; balancing the administrative demands with the provision of care, knowing that all the “good and bad” is all on me, and practicing in a rural environment. My advice is to develop a plan to provide the exceptional care that you believe in, and “run with it!”
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have been an occupational therapist for 11 years. I practice along the shores of beautiful South Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada. . I always loved working with people and supporting them to achieve their goals, which is what I do as an occupational therapist. I specialize in pediatrics, using an alternative model of care. I alternate parent consulting sessions with 1:1 pediatric sessions for families experiencing challenges with school, sleep, eating, and play. We develop a plan to improve “tough moments” at home. And work to establish strategies to help regulate BIG emotions, support all family members, and integrate sensory experiences. I love connecting with parents and helping parents connect with their children.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The most important part of building my reputation has been establishing positive therapeutic relationships with my clients. That speaks for itself. And in a small town, families know each other and share the positive experiences they have with care and support.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I would definitely choose the same profession OVER and OVER again. It is the best job in the world….for me!!!
