We were lucky to catch up with Rachel Winnick recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I knew that I wanted to pursue music professionally and take my craft seriously when I realized that, no matter what may be going on outside of my control in my life, making and sharing music just feels right all the time- no matter the circumstances. I can create lasting connections with people on a deeper level through lyricism and vocal choices/patterns. Learning and growing is all part of the process and that’s what I enjoy about being in creative spaces and working with new people. One of the most difficult parts of being an Artist is remaining strong and believing in yourself and the creative energy you have to offer. You will be knocked down and have to make difficult decisions but it’s all a part of the process. Although performing can be nerve wracking and feel intense at times, I always find myself in the pocket when I am singing live or in the studio. I feel right at home.
Rachel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
First, I want to say thank you for taking the time to read this segment. My name is Rachel Winnick and I am leading what I call the “Real is Rare” community. My mission as an artist and individual is to build and maintain authentic connections, be creative, and grow with/help others. I believe the most important thing we can do for ourselves and others is be true to who we are and know our worth. Real is Rare simply reflects the authentic parts of ourselves, flaws and strengths, as purely as possible. I aspire to create genuine music for all types of listeners and have a passion for building and maintaining authentic connections with other creative individuals.
As a vocalist, I have studied both classically and in musical theater when I was younger. I then decided to pursue my Jazz and Commercial music degree at the University of Denver. I aim to project elegance and contemporary resonance in my music and would consider most of my original music to fall under soulful, cross-genre pop styles. Authenticity and emotional connection are very important to me in my journey. I am dedicated to letting the music speak and focusing on lyrical intent in all I create- being real and true to bloom.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
To me, the most rewarding aspects of being an Artist include having the ability to work at the pace necessary for proper growth, being able to learn/choose who to work and grow with, and hearing that your music has resonated with listeners. Rushing the process of artistic development and creativity do not guarantee a solid foundation for healthy cultivation and growth. In my opinion, creativity should never be forced. Figuring out the right people to surround yourself with and work with are immensely important and have a large impact on artistic direction. Sometimes, you have to unfortunately learn the hard way if someone does not have your best interests in mind. But recognizing this is an important learning lesson for all creatives. The most beautiful works are created when you’re in the right room with the right people there with the same energy. Find where you are celebrated and challenged, not tolerated. One of the best feelings in the world is connecting with others through your creative works and hearing that your music has reached and resonated with others.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I believe the thriving creative ecosystem starts within the creative and artistic environments. We all must have positive energy, respect, and clear communication with one another. As creatives, we should all want to build a strong community, not fake a strong community. If we continue to grow together, collaborate, and challenge each other, we will move mountains and be seen for our strengths and talents. Be honest and humble- lead life with integrity and have these pillars stand strong in this industry and all areas of life.
