We were lucky to catch up with Rachel Wilson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
At the age of 16, I was in the car with my family, no one was wearing a seatbelt and we had a front wheel blowout and the car fell down the slippery slopes of San Diego. What should have been a 6 casket funeral turned out to be my defining moment! Something clicked! Myself and my family were able to walk away with minor scrapes and bruises. I went from thinking I was about to lose my life at 16 to being empowered to live life with purpose. Since that day I decided to really adhere to my call in ministry and women empowerment. I am now a National Recording Artist, Founder and CEO of Girl Talk International and a Certified Life Coach.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a woman of God whose aspirations and goals are to primarily please God and fulfill his purpose for my life. I am the proud wife of Ronald Wilson and we have been married for 26 years. I am also a proud mother of 4 boys, which I consider to be a major highlight in my life. In addition, I have pastored alongside my husband for the past 24 years. I am also a certified life coach where I coach women to their destiny. If you are looking for direction, understanding your purpose in life, marriage counseling, or any other life guidance, I am here to help, because the first step for any situation is to know and understand you are not alone. I am the founder and executive director of Girl Talk International, Inc. which was established 13 years ago. Girl Talk International (GTI) is a faith based organization that empowers and inspires women from all walks of life, who may have been victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and other life traumatic experiences to help them recover, heal, and redevelop their self-worth and self-esteem. Girl Talk also provides women and girls with the opportunity to come together and strengthen each other through personal experiences; ultimately helping one another to rebuild and cope with the many issues that tend to affect us, such as self-worth deficiencies. Our goal is to be instrumental in the healing of past wounds and the restoration of the spirit. Girl Talk’s vision is for women to help usher one another into their respective destinies and discover their purpose. Six years ago Girl Talk International launched “Flavors” which is a faith based, middle school after-school mentorship program for girls.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I think of resilience it automatically takes me to my journey of being a psalmist. As I mentioned above I started singing at the age of 5 and released my first single at the age of 19 because of the support of my now husband, Dr. Ronald Wilson. I knew early that I was not only called to the gospel music industry but also called to be a household name in the industry. Although I knew this, I had no idea of the process it would take to get there. Throughout this journey I have experienced many setbacks, being overlooked, lack of support from people that I thought would and should support me, and etc. These all played a role in my life of hurt and much frustration along the way. I had a warped perspective that if God called me to this path it will be easy. That was far from the truth. I’ve been in this process for many years and I’m just now starting to see things try to level out where I feel like my work is being noticed and respected. I felt like giving up so many times along the way and when I look back I don’t know how I made it through certain seasons, but I never gave up. It is my hope that my story and process will help encourage others to be resilient and never give up on their dreams.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn was poverty. I was born into poverty and struggle was all I knew. I knew how to spend money and always thought I needed more of it. When I met my husband, he had the same lesson of poverty and together we were broke. We both were working a job and didn’t have enough to pay our $300 rent! We got to a point and said we have to do something different. We had to unlearn poverty and learn wealth. My husband even wrote a book about Money Needs and how we don’t necessarily need more money but money needs our mind. That book is a picture of what I had to learn and now money is not our problem. I haven’t worked a regular 9-5 job since my oldest son, Ronald Jr. was born over 20 years ago. We have more now than we have ever had because of a changed mind. I am now able to help other women unlearn poverty and learn wealth through my life coaching sessions.
