We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rachel Wever a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Absolutely! My parents taught me to never give up. A bit cliché, but it’s true. All through grade school they never let me quit a project or a group I started; I wanted to quit sports, band, and dual credit classes, but they refused to allow it. It frustrated me so much at the time! As an adult, when I’m upset about my lack of free time or the demands of my job, they still have never once said, “Well then, just walk away.” They show their love and support through taking my phone calls for “attitude adjustments,” that lift me up and give me strength to fight through the low moments. They believe in seeing through one’s commitments and they have passed that trait on to me. With this, they have taught me dedication, perseverance, and loyalty.
Rachel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up in a small town in North Central Missouri. My love for fitness was ignited when my older brother invited me out for a run. Though I begrudgingly accepted and suffered through the whole thing, I was hooked by the endorphins afterwards. I achieved my Personal Trainer certification through the National Academy of Sport Medicine (NASM) in 2016. In addition, I hold certifications as a Fitness Nutrition Specialist and a Corrective Exercise Specialist (NASM). Outside of personal training, I enjoy teaching group class formats; Vinyasa Yoga, PiYo, ACFit, and Barre Forte. I have worked in the fitness industry since 2016 and achieved status as a Master Trainer in 2019.
What exactly am I doing with all of that? I am on a mission to defeat the negativity that media and fad diets have placed on our society. I navigated my teenage years through early 20s with anorexia. Thankfully, along the journey I found true health and fitness. You can rest assured that I’ve been there, tried that, and got the t-shirt. I’m here to stop future generations from believing the lies I believed, and to help those who already hold the aftermath of being through the storms of self-abuse themselves.
I work one-on-one with my clients, in person and online. I create and operate all of my clients’ programs with only science-proven techniques. We work together to improve fitness, nutrition, and mindset. I connect deeply with my clients; I care about their personal lives and their goals as if they were my own. I love getting to know each individual I work with and sleuthing out what works best for their unique life.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
The people who are most successful in the fitness world are those who are the most persistent. The people who won’t quit until they get the thing they’re after. Being successful as a coach means using your persistence to help others find what they need to reach their goals, then helping them get back up time and time again along their journey to reaching that goal. Being successful as a coach means never giving up on yourself or your clients. You have to cultivate persistence every day, through all the frustrating low points, all the side-tracking high points, and all the confusing middle points in between.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I’ve tried a lot of strategies for growing clientele. Some have been mildly successful, some have been counter-productive, and some have been a waste of money. The strategy that has worked best for me is building true relationships with the clients that I currently coach. I train them, help them achieve real results, and I honestly care about them as a person along the way. These clients spread positive word-of-mouth and it helps to grow my clientele exponentially. Building true relationships doesn’t only benefit your piggy bank, it feeds your soul. As a bonus, transferring this relationship building to other aspects of your life could help lead you even further in your career field.
