We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rachel Tucker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rachel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I personally believe that true authenticity and passion are the keys to finding success within any industry. If you aren’t honest and authentic with yourself about your passions, then what’s the point? I grew up in a household that held passion and authenticity very highly. We chose to experiment with the possibility of failure. But that’s how you find what you are most passionate about and where you want to spend your time. There is so much opportunity in the world, especially with the ever growing age of technology. Use whatever opportunity life throws at you, be honest with yourself, and run with it until you reach your goals. You’ll find yourself living authentically and more successfully.
Rachel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Who am I? I always find this to be a hard question. It’s difficult to define yourself when you are continually growing in your own experiences and the world around you is continually changing. Currently, I am a photographer, an artist, a lover of movement and experiences. I am fascinated by new opportunities and I love forming new relationships. I recently moved to Colorado to pursue a full time position in marketing direction, content creation, and social media management for Pikes Peak International Raceway. As I continue to navigate this new adventure, I use my photography business to find new experiences.
Growing up, I wanted to be a pastry chef and dreamed of attending culinary school. Little did I know, I would fall in love with photography, obtain a degree for it, and one day have that lead to my own photography business. As a photographer, I focus on the automotive culture, I capture authentic relationships, and I create experimental photographs. My work covers various styles and mediums. I don’t want to be confined to one particular approach. I love to experience, and I want to capture those experiences. I love getting to know people and hearing their stories. I love listening to people talk about their passions as the excitement rises in their eyes. I love the adrenaline that comes with the motorsport community. I love movement and the ability to feel its passage. I love the wind, the dirt, the grime. I love the trees, the mountains, the water. I love to learn. I love to help. I love to feel.
There is still so much more to learn as I continue on this journey of becoming who I want to be and where I want to take my business. I appreciate all of the support and encouragement over the years as I transitioned into this time. I hope to continue in this pursuit of adventure and experiences.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the relationships that you find and grow along the way. If it weren’t for the people I met throughout this journey, I wouldn’t have found my true passion in photography.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I gained an interest in photography during high school. I was always fascinated by the technology behind it and the history of how the camera came to be what it is today. I would photograph my friends in obscure places, create scenes based on my surroundings, or experiment with the camera itself. Soon the interest became a side job. I decided to go to college for photography and the arts. I learned the history, the process, and how to become my own artist. I fell in love with film photography and used the body to create movement and form. Motion became a prevalent aspect in my work and led me to the automotive culture and motorsports community. I became obsessed with speed and adrenaline. One particular motorsports event sparked a whole new interest in me and I took off running with it. I was able to meet some people that I now call my best friends. The opportunity that came form those relationships is what got me where I am today. I have now been working in the motorsports industry for just about two years, learning about new ways I can grow my own business in the future. The one thing that never changed? My love for relationships and experiences.
