We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rachel Smith. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rachel below.
Rachel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My most meaningful project to date is the 9’ mural I painted at Foxy’s Proper Pub downtown. Although this one isn’t the most creative since it was simply branding, it has been the most meaningful. This is because it’s the first mural I did after quitting the 9-5 job I was miserable at.
I remember the last morning of painting this mural, I was about 15’ up on a scissor lift in the middle of downtown at sunrise, facing a building I had previously done interior design work in. I reminisced on the feelings I felt while taking measurements in that building as a designer and the feelings I was currently feeling as a muralist – night and day. As a designer, I felt like my soul was sucked from my body every morning as I got ready for work. As a muralist, my heart explodes with excitement and potential..
The Foxy’s mural was a symbol of “I can do this. I belong here. This is my passion. This is my purpose.” and that’s what makes it meaningful.
Rachel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew up loving to create art, but was told it wouldn’t make money. So, I went into interior design, which funny enough, also doesn’t make money.
In 2020, I pivoted my career and decided to give my childhood dreams a chance. I impulsively bought a pottery wheel, took a class and simultaneously dabbled in painting at large scale.
Today, I’m half muralist, half ceramicist. I offer small-batch functional ceramics, as well as murals, to bring a new life to your space.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I think it’s a fun concept and hope they will benefit creatives greatly!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My biggest fear in life is unfilled potential. Hearing older generations talk about dream jobs they never went for, or dreams they let die absolutely kills me. I never want to get to the later part of my life and wonder what could have been. My goal is to be at least 1% better every single day, so my future self will thank me,
