We recently connected with Rachel Sellick and have shared our conversation below.
Rachel, appreciate you joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Naming a business definitely isn’t as easy as people say it is. It sounds simple right? Pick a name you like; pick something that resonates with the industry…. but finding one you like is another story. I was really fortunate when it came to naming my business. I was learning to drive at the time, and I was talking to my driving instructor about starting a music company. I’d mentioned that I wanted the business to reflect me – a fiery, independent woman, wanting to build a business! I loved the colour scarlet and thought that would fit in nicely, but my instructor had mentioned that we lived between ‘two rivers’…. so I put the two together, and ‘Scarlet River’ it was !
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Since its origin as a boutique management agency, Scarlet River has worked with award-winning country music artists in the UK and in Nashville. Its name is widely known throughout the industry thanks to the diligence, persistence and hard work of its founder, Rachel Sellick.
Since 2020, Rachel and her business have been nominated multiple times for Fair Play Country’s music management company of the year, as well as receiving nominations from Indie Star Radio, Woods Music Norway and the International Singer-Songwriters Association (ISSA).
Scarlet River PR works with you, the client, to build a bespoke package that will fulfil your requirements and needs for promoting your music.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I have never valued ‘word of mouth’ more than I do with my business. I think the music industry can be really difficult to navigate, and unfortunately, there are too many occasions where artists have been lied to, and messed around by companies who are unable to provide the services they sell to their clients. I hope that I can offer some hope to artists by providing services that I can fulfil and give 100% to.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
One of the biggest lessons that I learnt starting my business, was to make sure you can walk before you run. When I got involved in the music industry, I started working with a couple of artists for free, to build an understanding of the role and what artists need from music industry companies such as promotions and management. I began to build a portfolio and attend events within the industry to build a network. This allowed me to build rapport, and get to know people on a personal level. I think that when people trust you and know that you mean well, it builds an opportunity to work together in the future.
