We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rachel Schultz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rachel below.
Rachel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
After 15 years of creating and teaching pottery I was encouraged by many close friends and family to launch my own business. I had always created my work as a personal outlet and gifting it to others, so the thought of entering into a business of creating and selling felt like a vulnerable move. When COVID hit and things were shutting down, it provided the time and space to really dive in. I had two close friends who helped me with marketing and setting up the financials which was a huge asset. Very quickly I had people reaching out both online and in brick & mortars to buy my work which was both encouraging and overwhelming. My commitment was to make beautiful things out of mud that would be affordable for more than just those with the means to purchase fine art.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have an art degree from Colorado State University and got into ceramics 8 years afterward. It quickly became a passion and something that spurred me on to continue learning and creating. I discovered that I loved adding 2D designs to functional 3D pottery. I am most proud that people have been able to bring beautiful pottery into their homes all across the country. I really want potential customers to know that I craft each piece intentionally, with thoughtful creativity, and the hope that it will bring joy. I really to love the creative process and how it intersects with my community.
How did you build your audience on social media?
The main social media presence I have for my pottery business is Instagram. I have worked to post at least 3 times a week with both photos and pottery process videos that show how I create various pieces. I have done a handful of their paid advertising campaigns over 5-7 day duration which have brought broader exposure to my work. It has connected me to both individuals and businesses that have expanded where I sell. I would encourage those seeking to have a social media presence to stay consistent with it.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I want my reputation to built on honesty and authenticity through open lines of communication with the businesses I work with and those who buy directly from me. I want people to know that if there is something wrong with a piece that I will do my very best to make it right. I have worked hard to develop close connections with the owners of the stores that I sell my pottery at which has been both fun and great partnerships.
