Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rachel Plymire. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rachel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear stories from your time in school/training/etc.
Going back to school was a scary change. I had graduated from college in 2009 decided to go back to school during the pandemic to make a career shift to something I had always been passionate about, health. I chose to got to the Nutritional Therapy Association due to the fact that they were science based on bio individuality in the holistic field. In depth learning of the various body systems was eye opening. As we discussed the endocrine system and studied it, I was shocked to learn how our everyday life, stress, food choices, impact our hormones. Learning about this system really helped me understand what was going on with my body and my loved ones around me. I knew then that I could really help people with their hormones and teach them about how hormonal imbalances are playing a role with the symptoms they experience. As we started to do case studies, I found that many people deal with things like Hashimoto’s, hypothyroid, or other thyroid conditions. These things greatly impact quality of life and I knew I wanted to support these people. As it turned out, my family has a long history of thyroid dysfunction, some diagnosed and others not. My philosophy is symptoms are symptoms and even if you don’t have a diagnosis, these life altering symptoms (extreme fatigue, hair loss, weight gain, constipation, etc) are NOT normal and need to be addressed! Just because it is common does not make it normal.
Rachel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Helping people has always been a passion of mine. As a former elementary teacher and reading specialist, I love to see people grow, change, and progress. Taking my classroom skills, and my education as a Nutritional Therapist, I will work with each client to get to the root cause by addressing the foundations of health.
Growing up in New Mexico and Ohio to be close to both sides of the family, I ended up in Mississippi studying elementary education while on a cheerleading scholarship. Moving to Texas where everything is bigger, I was hoping for more opportunity. Well, I sure found it and it sent me on a whole new path!
My mom and husband were both diagnosed with autoimmune diseases in fall of 2019 and I was reading every book out there about this and also found podcasts in 2020 as the pandemic began. I ended up deciding to shift careers and finished school to be a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner in November of 2021.
Everyone deserves to feel their best and it can be done with a food first approach focusing on a properly prepared, nutrient-dense, whole foods diet. This is not a quick fix or a bandage to mask symptoms but to really get to the root cause of the issue. There is also no “one size fits all” since we are all so biologically different. Nutritional Therapy centers on the support of our body as a whole. As a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, I will use a holistic and bio-individual approach to nutrition and lifestyle in order to improve health and well-being by emphasizing foundational support that will meet you where you are.
The Foundations:
Digestion
Blood Sugar
Fatty Acids
Minerals
Hydration
You’re in the right place if you’ve heard again and again that your symptoms are “normal” and something you have to live with. I’m telling you, you don’t!
Many symptoms are so common that they have become normalized, but that doesn’t mean they are normal.
Symptoms are like your body’s check engine light. They’re alerting something is off. Let’s listen up and take action!
While, working with clients that have hormone imbalances is a huge passion of mine, I can help clients that have gut dysbiosis, want to improve their overall health, or are diabetics. The possibilities are endless when you understand the root cause of what is going on and creating any symptoms you experience.
Private Consultations
We are all different so I take a bioindividual approach to each client. Here we will discuss your health goals, concerns, and I will get to hear your story. This is the beginning of our journey together.
Group Classes
As a certified RESTART instructor, I lead group classes that will teach about healthy eating and guide you through a 21 day sugar detox. This is another great place to start- with a group, partner, or on your own 1:1 with me. I will be there to support you the whole way!
1:1 Services
Our health doesn’t go sour overnight, but rather over months and even years… this cannot be reversed in a week or two but will take 3-6 months of coaching to get to the root cause and course correct to get you living life the way you always dreamed in a sustainable way.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Compassion for clients is a huge driving factor to be successful. One must listen to the client, ask lots of questions, and have a passion for helping others.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A major lesson that I had to unlearn is that eating less will help you be a healthy weight. This is SO far from the truth. When we deprive our body of energy (aka calories) we stress our bodies and because we are designed to strive for homeostasis, our bodies go into survival mode. Meaning, when we eat (calories aka energy), it will store it because it is in a state of insecurity and is not sure when our next food intake will happen. The metabolism slows to retain every drop of energy and we are running on stress hormones… This then leads to a long lasting impact on your metabolism. An intense calorie deficient diet leads to your metabolism slowing down and then you will find that when you eat a more normal calorie diet, you will gain weight. This low calorie/low energy plan will always backfire.
