We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rachel Newman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rachel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The idea for my coaching business and the MomME Community stemmed from my book MomME. While I was writing the book, I never had any intention of using the book to launch a business. However as the book launch date approached and the first readers were sending in their feedback, several people mentioned that I should help women learn the skills and strategies to enjoy motherhood more. Just like that the idea for the MomME Community was planted. I knew this would be something worthwhile because I’ve been in overwhelmed moms’ shoes. What we really need is another mom who is slightly further ahead than us to guide us through the struggles. We need ”the tribe” and I knew that I have a unique style of tackling mom problems. I’m most excited to be real with other moms, to provide them a space were they can talk about anything related to their motherhood experience, the good, bad, and ugly, and know they are going to be encouraged and supported.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Like many moms, I lost myself in service to my family. I was a teacher turned stay-at-home mom to 3 under 2 due to financial necessity. I went from a job I loved to staying home with a toddler and newborn twins, during the height of the pandemic. I was unhappy with our circumstances and felt powerless to change them. This lead me to spend months resenting my husband, our twins, and how life had turned out. My book is the step-by-step guide of how I overcame the resentment and began enjoying motherhood again. Now I work with women in the MomME Community, through stand alone courses, and 1:1 coaching to help them enjoy motherhood more. I believe moms are the cornerstone of the family and in order for a family to thrive, mom must thrive. In my work, I focus on uplifting mothers and teaching them how to practically and sustainably prioritize themselves.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’ve built my social media audience organically, which translates to without ads and over time. I utilize attraction marketing to bring people into my network. I show up as my authentic self – what you see on social media is the same as the Rachel you would see in at the playground with my kids. I engage with my audience and focus on building a community. I view my followers as community members and I show up to add value just like I would with in person groups.
My advice to someone who is starting to build on social media would be to go follow Colleen Nichols @noshamesalesgame right now and learn how to be normal on the internet. And then just show up as yourself. Share what you are comfortable with and let your personality show up in your messaging and branding.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think it’s that I’m relatable and transparent. I talk about the side of motherhood that many women experience but have no one to talk about it with. We talk about the hard things (anger, resentment, not loving every minute of motherhood) and I don’t believe in false positivity. I always acknowledge where we are at in motherhood and help others see the joy in those circumstances. I also approach the motherhood space from a different lens. Most coaches in this space focus on helping moms help their children, be it through sleep training, potty training, speech therapy, etc. I focus 100% on moms and helping moms find their joy in fulfillment in motherhood.
