Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rachel Moore. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rachel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
As a photographer and an artist, my style of portraiture is a bit different than what most people probably think of when someone thinks of “portrait photography.” I typically describe my niche as more of “conceptual fine art portraits” and most people when they hear that go, “huh?”
My biggest influence for my work is Renaissance paintings, which typically tell a story with symbolism and expressions within the painting itself. I try to do this with my photography as well, with composure and various lighting styles, and even the wardrobe. I do costume and fashion design as a hobby, and sometimes I’ll make or alter clothes for various photoshoots. If someone books a full portrait session with me, there’s options for me to also design the wardrobe or even create something from scratch as an add-on to the session.
Rachel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Rachel Moore, but my friends call me Moose. I am a photographer and an artist. I specialize in conceptual fine art portraiture and I also do weddings, commercial/product, and fashion editorial photography. I do videography as well. I got into the industry through the cosplay community, and I graduated in June 2022 with my Bachelors Degree in Commercial Photography from Nōssi College of Art in Nashville, TN.
I am proud to say that I have worked internationally and I have also worked New York Fashion Week.
I take a creative approach to my sessions. My work has been described several times that it looks like paintings. I look at the little details in addition to the overall big picture. My goal is to inspire others with my works. I like to work together with my clients to make their fantasies a reality and help them tell the stories they want to tell. I love working with clients that want to do creative and interesting conceptual sessions, whether they already have ideas, or want me to come up with something from scratch.
One project I am most proud of is my Fine Art Fashion series, Olympia. I created 26 images depicting different Greek Gods and Goddesses. I also made all of the clothes and wardrobe, mostly from scratch. I am currently working on a full photo book of the series.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I am still building an audience, but I have found that networking has been the best way for me. I also try to post good content on my socials that people will want to interact with, and sometimes I’ll spend $20 here and there to promote some of my photos that I think will do well or that are doing really well already organically. Video is also really big on social media right now, and people love to see some behind the scenes, so I make sure I take some video when I’m doing photo sessions. (If it’s a client I always check and make sure it’s okay first, and I try to share the footage with them too!)
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, I really love boosting someone’s confidence. I have met so many people that say “Oh, I’m not photogenic,” or they have other self image issues. I love to show them how beautiful they are. Everyone deserves a good photo of themselves. I truly believe that everyone is photogenic. You just need someone, like a professional photographer, that can help you find the right angles and poses that flatter you. Everyone is beautiful and unique, and that is photogenic. It is really rewarding for me to help show someone how beautiful they are and build them up and put a smile on their face.
