We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rachel Mitchell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rachel , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I can remember very clearly at about two full years into my fitness business sitting at my desk and asking God, “What’s next?”
I was complacent. A little bored. Not challenged in my work. It was FULFILLING work, and I was succeeding in it, but not challenged. I had practiced and remained consistent enough to get REALLY efficient at the basics. I’ve always challenged myself to stay in “Phase One” of my business, which just means doing the basic tasks well and with steadfastness. Yet that wasn’t enough anymore.
I knew that I was at a crossroads. Either I had to stay where I was and inevitably get bored enough to quit or LEVEL UP and set some scary new goals and challenges to stay focused and GROW!
Complacency, aka your “comfort zone”, as appealing as it may sound to some, isn’t so wonderful if you’re an achiever like me. Enneagrm 3w2 through and through… although I don’t put tons of stock in that, I DO love to excel and perform. God has taught me LOTS about my self and about my belief in Him in my business. This turning point; this fork in the road; this was a moment I look back and I recognize now God was saying, “Trust me.”
Trust me to give you the vision.
Trust me to lead the way.
Trust me to bless the work.
Trust me to be enough even if you don’t hit the big scary goal.
And I did. Trust Him. I didn’t hit the BIG scary goal that year, but I hit a new one. And the next three years after that, I achieved the TOP RANKS in my business with God leading the way.
I fell in love with the LEVELING UP and LISTENING to what God is telling me in my business. There have been times when that challenge was to be still. To remain in a hard season. It’s not always about hitting big goals and earning big income. Following God where He leads in your business just means getting unsettled enough to settle on Him!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Rachel Mitchell! Jesus follower, wife to Matt for 19 years, and mom to Henry (15) and Milo (13). I have a history in advanced education, but ten years ago God called me into the fitness industry! As a faith based fitness coach I lead women as they fight the good fight for their bodies and their bites with God’s word as their guide!
My online community, called “The Full Life Project”, is rooted John 10:10 which says that Jesus came to give us FULL LIFE! I know that for so many women, like myself, that battle for our bodies can be rooted in anything but abundance. But that’s the BEAUTIFUL truth of God’s word. He has created such a simple plan for food, our bodies, and how we WORSHIP Him with both (Romans 12:1) .
I coach women in private group settings as well as 1:1. Together we focus on nutrition, movement, mindset, and faith as the tools in the fight for our bodies. I know that the scriptural approach I bring to fitness is why most of my clients work with me. God uses my story of struggle in this area and HIS message of hope to allow me to help new women every single day.
I am so proud of the work I get to do. It is WORTHY work, and I know that even if a woman does not pay to work with me, God has given me a platform to encourage anyone who stumbles across my social platforms!
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
The one thing I see lacking the most in my industry is a spirit of “Stick-with-it-ness.” So many women commit to building a brand or a following or a business only to give up when life gets hard or they hit a road bump. As a woman who struggles with PMDD (Pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder), I am well aware of the “fraudy feelings” that can come with our menstrual cycle. PUSHING through to complete the work I know God has called me to REGARDLESS of how I feel is a key to success in my business. I pray many many other women are encouraged by this in WHATEVER field you are in! Stay the course. Do the work even when you don’t want to. Choose to REMAIN, and trust God to bless the work!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
As a business owner for ten years now, I would say that an effective strategy for growth is trying new things. I started with a very small social media following, which is where I conduct my business, and have grown by getting outside my comfort zone. Consistently focusing on the trends that come with social media has allowed me to stay in the game and NEVER run out of new potential clients.
