We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rachel Medina a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rachel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Being a single mom has its challenges. Being a single mom commuting day in and day out for a dead end job means prioritizing something that makes us miserable over those we love most. And in 2015, I was doing just that. Until I took a leap of faith that began with one simple decision to stop commuting and figure out how to earn a living from home.
Having a front row seat to my children’s lives became the driving force that fueled me forward. One year later I was a single mom who built a million dollar business, after divorce, over the age of 40, and I did it from home with the help of a small but mighty team.
Being an entrepreneur, working from home, afforded me the opportunity to show up for my sons in ways they had not seen me do before. We no longer lived for the weekend. Whether it was Disneyland on a Tuesday, or a month in Europe, if we thought it, we did it!
This sparked a desire within me to create a podcast for women where I share my entrepreneurial journey and some life lessons I’ve learned along the way. The goal was to introduce women to the idea that they can be present mothers, and build their dream career, all from home – before it was popular to do so. And in 2019, the Rachel Unpacked Podcast was born!
Today, I host not one, but two podcasts for women in the top 10%. The Rachel Unpacked podcast is ranked 5th in the nation by Feed Spot, for women and moms wanting to build a business from home. While, You Deserve Fresh Lettuce is a fun relationship podcast I co-host with my friend Delia Monarch, that has begun gaining traction in several countries around the world.
With the success of Rachel Unpacked, and a global pandemic that gave everyone a view of the remote landscape, calls and DM’s began to trickle in from women seeking coaching for ways to build a business from home.
Suddenly, the idea to help women unpack their inner SHE,EOO,OOO one coaching call at a time, evolved into a fun and inspiring brand pronounced [SHE-E-O]
The exciting and unique thing about she, eoo, ooo is it offers members an online community that includes access to trending and traditional business ideas, courses, collaboration, resources, tools, support, and all things needed to build a business from home, all in one platform.
One key ingredient of the she, eoo, ooo mission is that women will no longer need to feel alone on their entrepreneurial, work from home journey. Whether you’re wanting to build an online store or exploring side hustles for extra money, the community is here for you. Whether it’s our C.O.O. Daneen San Pedro sharing an inspirational video in the community café, me answering your questions in a live AMA in our guru space, or other members cheering you on in the comment section of one of our many business topic areas, we are all in this together!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
Rachel Medina | Entrepreneur | Podcast Host | & The Ultimate SHE,EOO,OOO!
As a 25 year multimedia, advertising and marketing professional – turned entrepreneur, who has held high level leadership roles, trained executive management and sales teams, helped navigate the success of multiple brands, including startups, launches, and the formation of my own businesses, I’m still eager to learn new things every day, and share the gems with my community.
Over the years, I have encountered talented women with wonderful business ideas who simply didn’t know where to begin. This was a key aspect to my content plan for the Rachel Unpacked Podcast, where the show focuses on business mindset, wealth building, and faith.
Today, with the rise of TikTok’s side hustle culture, and the economic wake of a global pandemic, there is a fomo energy (fear of missing out) that is creating a sense that everyone has to figure it all out before it’s “too late” or over-saturated.
This is why I am all-in on my beliefe that the she, eoo, ooo community is an absolute game changer. Taking off from where the Rachel Unpacked podcast started, and offering practical tools, access to vetted experts and how-to guides, plus real time support from our team. All while members of the she, eoo, ooo community are encouraged to post their questions and encouraged to help one another get unstuck!
I was forturnate enough to have had wonderful people on my team and in my corner when I launched my business. However, not everyone has that, and it can make the home based entrepreneurial journey feel isolating and frustrating at times – until now.
It is very exciting to be in a space where my team and I can take all that we have learned over the years and package it up into a brand, service, and community that will have a real impact on women and the quality of life of their families. Being able to help female entrepreneurs earn real income from their laptops, and save countless hours searching YouTube and google for the tools and resources they need to start and run their businesses from home, is the she, eoo, ooo community’s winning formula. It’s all here. It’s all real. And it’s all about empowering women to succeed on their terms while supporting them on their journey!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A surprising lesson that I learned when my business passed the million dollar mark was that my definition of success prior to that moment was tied to money. All of my adult life I measured my success and the success of others with the amount of money earned.
I had the money and no time to enjoy it. And if I made time, it wasn’t quality time.
While on a month-long trip to Europe, where I was finally able to unplug and truly connect with my family, and God, I had an epiphany that felt like something out of the romcom movie, Eat. Love. Pray. But this was no movie, it was my life. I was filled with gratitude – and pasta, but what I came to accept somewhere between Paris and Rome, is that I was not living in my purpose. Sure I cracked the code on how to build a business with people I enjoyed working with, that generates serious money without ever leaving my house. But creating a life that offers the freedom to earn a living helping others while being present for myself and those I love most – that was the kind of success I longed for.
From that point forward, I was on a silent mission to navigate away from my core business and build a brand that shares the keys to this new type of success with other moms and women just like me who want their cake or pasta – and eat it too!
Welcome to the birth of the Rachel Unpacked podcast and the SHE,EOO,OOO community.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Early on I had a wonderful mentor who told me never to throw dirt because I will lose ground. This came at a time when I was brand new to ad sales and I put down a competitor in an effort to make the company I was selling for, look more desirable to the client.
I applied that advice to every area of my life. Over time, my mindset shifted from negative self talk and negative commentary about others – even jokingly, to one that learned to rise above the noise. But the most interesting thing is that when you operate from that elevated mental space on a personal, social, and professional plane, you set an unspoken standard for yourself, that exudes integrity.
This means that when I am creating content, I aim for consistency and authenticity. Being consistent and authentic is key to building trust in your market. But you need to really drill down on your core values and show up with that as your operating agreement.
In short, it’s the little, seemingly insignificant things, you do and say on a regular basis that shapes one’s reputation.
And this is what the foundation of the she, eoo, ooo community is built on.
