We were lucky to catch up with Rachel Margis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rachel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I wanted to create positive and cute jewelry that would last a lifetime for people – and not just a chapter of their lives.
There are so many brands that sell beautiful jewelry – but one thing that I noticed in the industry of dainty gold jewelry, was that many necklaces bought nowadays – unless they are branded as a fine jewelry – typically sell pricey gold jewelry that ends up tarnishing. So I wanted to change something about this.
I used to buy from some of these jewelry companies. I loved the adorable gold necklaces – but noticed that they would still turn dull and green.
Most jewelry nowadays are made with hardly any actual gold. They are made with “gold-plated” metals. Meaning that the jewelry has only up to 0.05% of actual gold.
So I started selling jewelry that had more gold in it so they would stop tarnishing. It’s what’s called gold-filled jewelry.
Gold-filled jewelry is made of 5% gold which has 100x more actual gold than gold-plated jewelry. You can wear this jewelry in water, at the beach, and it will not tarnish.
But I also wanted to make the jewelry cute, adorable, and stackable so each wearer can create their own adorable and personalized stack.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I taught myself to make jewelry back when I was just 12 years old. And throughout my life, one of my main missions in life has been to make the world a happier, cuter and sparklier place to allow our inner child to be free. I have always been an advocate for embracing our inner-child as it brings so much healing, joy and color in life.
I so I started a couple jewelry businesses. I created one business that was crystal hair jewelry for weddings and music festivals. Now, I have a demi-fine jewelry business that gives high quality gold jewelry that is more wallet-friendly than fine jewelry.
I want to give a piece of magic to every person that they can wear forever.
I am the most proud of the custom pieces I make for my clients. Sometimes they know exactly what they want while other times, they want my creative recommendation. Seeing my clients ecstatic and bringing their custom jewel to life is what brings me so much joy!
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
As a business owner, you’re in an exciting position to impact so many people.
For me, I’ve learned that having your own business is more than making money – a lasting business is about building a community and positive relationships with customers. Having a business allows you to impact so many around you with the message you bring into the world. You can to truly create something that was only in your imagination at one time. And the exciting thing is that your customers may have been dreaming to see the same thing.
It all comes down to maintinaing a positive relationship with your customers which impacts your brand.
Each day, I have many current and prospective customers that ask about a brand ambassador program and being a part of the mission. Things like having a brand ambassador program, texting and emailing your customers to keep them in the loop and clearly communicating the main message of your brand will keep them engaged and win their loyalty.
But it must be genuine and as long as they want to be a part of that mission and they understand the true personality of your brand, that’s how you keep the loyalty.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My advice is look to focus on 1-2 platforms.
I’m still learning so much, but I’ve taken time to invest more in Instagram and TikTok since I know that’s where jewelry sells well.
Start looking at what the “winners” are doing, and then build on that by taking your own angle. Be consistent as it does take time – expect that it will take time and keep going. And make sure to use social media for what it’s meant for – being social! Engage with the community you’re building into so you can built rapport and liking.
