We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rachel Lee Perez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rachel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
We are big believers that History is for everybody and that there is something for everybody to love about it.
Okay, so History was your least favorite subject in school. Okay, so the Industrial Revolution bores you to pieces. That’s fine! But then find that one thing about History that you do love. Study Al Capone! Study Presidential Assassinations! Study the Salem Witch Trials! That’s where it starts!
Here at Hashtag History, we are all about taking a deeper dive into History’s greatest stories of controversies, conspiracies, and corruptions. Trust me; there is no way you can get bored with this stuff!
It is our mission to make History interesting, engaging, and entertaining for our audience; both History Lovers and History Haters alike.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been an avid podcast listener for years and always thought it would be fun to create one of my own. As someone that was a History major in school but does not use my History degree at my day job, I was very interested in finding an outlet that would allow me to deep dive into my love and expertise in the History field. This is when I discovered that my love for podcasts and my love for History could merge.
I understand that many people do not enjoy History. For many people, it may have been their least favorite subject in school. It is the mission of the Hashtag History Podcast to change that. We at Hashtag History are committed to delivering stories about people and events in History in an entertaining and engaging way that captures the interest of History Lovers and History Haters alike.
We are so proud of the numerous reviews we have received from listeners that say we have done just that. We have heard from several listeners that they did not used to like History until they started listening to our podcast.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media has played a huge factor in the growth of our podcast. Back in the day when hashtags really helped you find other similar accounts, we would use hashtags on all of our posts. This allowed us to connect with fellow History accounts, History podcasters, and general History lovers. From there, we built connections with these people and oftentimes exchanged shout-out posts or even appeared on their podcasts as guests. This provided us with a wider reach and, ultimately, more people finding our page and following us.
Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?
I think it is important to have multiple streams of revenue for any small business. The Hashtag History Podcast utilizes Patreon subscriptions, merchandise sales, and brand deals or sponsorships to fund our project.
