We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rachel Hester a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Growing up, I was always drawn to hair. It wasn’t just something to be styled—it was my canvas, a way to express myself creatively in a world where I often felt misunderstood. While other kids were outside playing, I was inside practicing braids on my dolls, experimenting with twist-outs, or watching hours of hair tutorials, captivated by the magic of transformation.
But childhood wasn’t easy. I was bullied for things that made me different—my appearance, my hair, my voice. That pain could’ve broken me, but instead, it fueled me. Every cruel word, every moment I felt like I didn’t belong, became motivation to do better, to achieve more, and to prove to myself that I was worthy of success and happiness.
Hair became my escape. It was the one space where I could fully be myself, where I felt in control. When I was doing hair—whether mine or someone else’s—I wasn’t thinking about the judgment or the noise. I was focused on the beauty in front of me, on the transformation, on the confidence that bloomed in someone’s eyes when they saw themselves in the mirror.
That’s when I knew this was more than a hobby. It was a calling.
I decided to become a natural hair specialist not only because it aligned with my passion, but because I wanted to give others what hair gave to me: a sense of self-worth, beauty, and empowerment. I know how powerful it is to feel seen and celebrated in your natural state. My mission is to help people fall in love with their hair—and themselves.
This business plan isn’t just about building a career. It’s about healing, expression, and turning past pain into purpose. I’m proud of where I came from, and even prouder of where I’m going.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Rachel , a 22-year-old Libra and proud Memphis native who found her voice through the art of hair. Growing up, I realized that hair was more than just strands—it was a powerful form of self-expression. It became my safe space, my creative outlet, and ultimately, my purpose. What started as a way to express my own individuality quickly evolved into a deep love for helping others feel confident and beautiful in their natural selves.
Hair is incredibly unique—it tells stories, carries culture, and gives you the freedom to switch up your vibe whenever you want. From silk presses to twist-outs, from vibrant colors to simple, clean treatments—there’s no limit to the ways hair can be transformed, and that’s what inspires me every day.
This isn’t just a hobby for me—it’s a lifelong passion. I’m a licensed natural hair specialist and cosmetologist, trained to work with every texture and curl pattern. I take pride in not only styling but treating and restoring hair health. My clients come to me for the full experience: a luxurious, relaxing space where they can unwind and feel taken care of, whether it’s their first visit or their fifteenth.
At the salon, we make self-care feel special. We offer complimentary cocktails, mocktails, tea, soda, coffee, and light refreshments for longer services—because your time here should feel like a break from the world. Every client leaves in a fantastic mood, not just because of their hair, but because of the energy.
What sets me apart is who I am at the core—goofy, loving, caring, and dependable. I create an environment where you can laugh, decompress, and just be. I believe in good vibes, good service, and even better hair.
This is more than beauty—this is energy, connection, and transformation. Welcome to the experience.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective way I’ve grown my clientele has definitely been through word-of-mouth and creating a memorable experience for every client who sits in my chair. I focus on more than just hair—I focus on how people feel when they leave. From the quality of my work to the energy I bring, I make sure every service is personal, relaxing, and tailored to each client’s needs. That feeling of being genuinely cared for sticks with people, and they naturally tell their friends, family, or co-workers.
Social media has also played a huge role—I stay consistent with posting my work, sharing tips, behind-the-scenes moments, and interacting with my followers so they feel connected. But at the end of the day, it’s the experience that makes people come back and refer others. I’ve built my brand around trust, consistency, and positive energy—and that’s what keeps my chair full.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Running my business hasn’t always been easy, but resilience is the reason I’m still standing and growing. There were times I questioned myself, had slow seasons, or faced challenges that could’ve broken my spirit—but I never gave up. I’ve always believed that passion, consistency, and faith in my purpose would carry me through. Every setback has taught me something and made me stronger, more creative, and more determined.
Being a young entrepreneur, especially in the beauty industry, means wearing many hats and constantly pushing yourself. But I’ve learned how to adapt, how to stay grounded, and how to keep showing up—even when it’s hard. I remind myself daily why I started: to uplift others, to create a safe and beautiful space, and to share my love for hair as a form of healing and confidence.
Resilience isn’t just about pushing through—it’s about growing through. And that’s exactly what I’ve done.
