We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rachel Hall a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rachel , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
I would have to say the moment my husband gave me a camera to express myself. I had been struggling with some health issues that severely curtailed my ability to create the art I had previously been doing and it was like being given hands again. That camera helped me heal through surgeries and kept me motivated on the hard days. Now it’s the foundation for my current business and has set me on the journey that I’m more suited and so excited for.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I had a very different career path originally but my health derailed that and changed the way I was able to work. I had always done acrylic painting on the side but when my health took a turn I began taking photos as a way to heal and still be able to create something. Eventually as my health improved along with my photography, I started submitting to open calls and ended up in the event and live music space. So far, I’m most proud of any work that evokes emotion in my client, whether it’s a surprise happening or even something staged. What I try to provide for my clients is a wide variety of services along with captures that focus on powerful moments big and small, with an expedited turn over rate. I love meeting clients’ creative challenges and always have my ultimate goal to make the clients experience easy and happy. Whether it’s finding the perfect delivery method or how someone should be posing, we try and problem solve any issue that comes up, which is easier sometimes when you own a small business.
At this point, we provide a mix of event based and lifestyle photography along with fine art nature and city prints individually for sale that gives us several opportunities to show and pursue.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
For a long time I had done art in various forms or fashion until slowly my health became a pretty large barrier. After a particularly traumatic surgery, I swore I was done with art because I felt I had lost all ability to create. But in the end, my camera helped me heal, little by little, pushing me to go outside, walk a little further and get pieces of my own life back. So while this story may illustrate my resilience, I also like to chalk it up to the motivating and sometimes healing art of self expression.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Lately, I have had a ton of luck one of two ways. The first is networking in our already large art community and then providing high quality images at an expedited rate so they remember my name and have them ready to go for social media. My second and favorite method however, is going into random music venues and bars, documenting the scene. Then I’ll spend the time checking in with the owner/manager/act after the show and deliver them all content from the evening that I’ve taken.
