We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rachel Curtis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, thanks for joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
The short answer is I would have started earlier. Doing what you love, with the right attitude, can really change your life for the better. If anyone is waiting for the right time to start living your life to the fullest the answer is today.
My background is in muti day corporate events. During the pandemic, I started working with brides and have really enjoyed the personal relationship I have built with them. I have been event planning for the past eight years. I went out on my own in 2021 during the pandemic. I wish I had started my business sooner because it takes time to get established and there is no time like the present.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Rachel Curtis and I’m the owner of Elegant Insight Events LLC. We help our clients plan events, so they can focus on the things in their life that are most important. My office is in NC, but I travel all over the country helping people plan weddings, corporate, charity and social events. I first started planning events in 2016 when I took a corporate job as a planner. I stayed there for six years and then decided to open Elegant Insight Events. It was during the pandemic that I started to focus on working with brides because most of the corporate events were all going virtual and people still wanted to get married in person. I loved the energy that I would get from helping brides. In 2022, I had a bride thank me in her speech to her guests. It meant so much to me because I had never received that kind of appreciation on the corporate side. I was also spending about a year on average with most of my brides and so I got to know them pretty well during that time. At the end of the day, I felt like I had gained a friend and was so honored to be making a living doing something I enjoyed.

We offer full service planning to our clients. Some wedding and event planners like to focus on day of management or partial service, but we like to be involved from the beginning, so we focus on full service planning. Full service planning includes helping our clients find a venue for their event, a website for their guests to visit, budget, dress and attire, photographer, videographer, makeup, hair, webcasting, transportation, live bands, Djs, musical entertainment, dance lessons, photo booth, cigar bars, live painters, magicians, decor, catering, bakers, officiants, speciality signs, pre-marital counseling, ice sculptures, favors, pet sitters and so much more.


Our clients are busy and they are not sure where to start with finding the vendors needed to bring their event vision to life. We help remove the stress of planning, finding the right vendors and allow our clients to show up to their big day as a guest. Something that sets us apart is that we get to know our clients and take a genuine interest in them. We make ourselves available when they need help and we try to go the extra mile to anticipate their needs before they are expressed.

We are most proud of our five star reviews because we want every person we work with to have a 5-star experience. We try to be proactive in asking the right questions before the event, so on the day of the event, we don’t have to bother you with small questions.

We want our followers and potential clients to know that if you decide to work with us that your success is very important to us. Our goal is for you to show up to your event as a guest and just enjoy the people that are there to celebrate with you. We put our heart, soul, time and energy into each event and we want all our clients to feel as though they are our only client.

As an organization, we like to give back and speak to high school students about event planning and encouraging them to consider their natural skills and how to best use them. We also love doing charity events and welcome the opportunity to help others in any way that we can.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
My side hustle did turn into my business by learning as much as I could from people who had been doing it longer than me. Getting a mentor my first year in business was very helpful. They tell you what works and what to avoid from the start.
While I was working in corporate america I had started working with brides on the weekends since weddings mostly take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I only had three clients when I left my day job, but I was determined to make it work. The freedom and the responsibility of having your own business is amazing and it can be a lot of ups and downs. My attitude was to keep going, no matter what. I love the freedom of caring for my family and my clients without the added pressure of answering to one person.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?

My business team member and I have known each other since childhood. Our mothers were good friends and growing up we went to the same church, attended camps together and would always enjoy seeing each other on the weekends. We grew up together on Long Island and now we live near each other in North Carolina. We are both pretty easy going and calm which is important when we are dealing with last minute changes and obstacles at our events. We work very well together professionally and have a long history of working well together as friends.
