We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rachel Chang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rachel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
That I was innovative – following in the footsteps of my grandfather (that opened the first supermarket in Jamaica and the entire West Indies) and my Dad (that invented his own rocket battery). My dance fitness company, ReggaeFit, was my own creation that I have trademarked and has successfully been in business for over a decade and I hope will continue far into the future.
That I “wore many hats” successfully all with the intention of leaving an amazingly full legacy for my children. On top of owning ReggaeFit and being a dancer, I am a singer/songwriter, self-published children’s books author, appraiser by day, and a fulltime MOM.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am the Founder of ReggaeFit, a Caribbean dance fitness company, that has successfully been in business for over a decade. My company provides health and wellness both inside and out… so not only weight loss and muscle toning, but gaining self-confidence and peace-of-mind. This is why ReggaeFit has been so important for me to maintain – I have clients that have made the program a daily part of their lives, have been taken off high-blood pressure medication because of ReggaeFit, and have cried to me to keep it going. That makes me proud; that something I created is helping so many in the world, and I hope to reach more in time.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
ReggaeFit is truly unique, in that it has benefitted from becoming corporate account-based. We have partnership agreements in place with schools and universities where we provide fitness classes to the students and employees. So our goal in marketing is to reach more businesses and schools to provide our services (via LinkedIn, word-of-mouth from schools we are at, attending business trade shows, etc). Now that we have received non-profit status, this has been a very favorable source for attracting new accounts and clients in general.
Any advice for managing a team?
I think having an open-door policy is paramount, and just being in the thick of things with your team as opposed to only being a delegator will get you far with your team. And always be encouraging of your team individually. Get to know what is important to them in everyday life and give them advice and the freedom to push their dreams. Of course, being too friendly can hurt you in the end too; you have to learn that balance so they will still respect that you as leading the team.
