We were lucky to catch up with Rachel Catherine recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rachel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I wish I hadn’t waited so long to figure out what it was I wanted to do. I’ve always been very in decisive and have always had trouble sticking to one thing because I get bored easily and want to move onto something else. I wish I had started photography sooner than I had, maybe when I first got my camera because I think then maybe I’d know more about what I’m doing and how to get a better start instead of waiting 10 years to actually start photography when I had the tools right in front of me. I was too busy focusing on things that I wanted but weren’t really in my reach as a young teen. What I would’ve have changed back then is probably exploring my camera and taking advantage of the fact that I had one. Looking back I wish I had started sooner because now I feel like I’ve fallen so behind on life and I’m rushing to catch up.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a freelance photographer in my 20s, I live in Detroit, MI. I got my first camera in 2015 and originally planned on using it for YouTube videos but then I started using it for photos in 2017/18 when I’d just take photos of anything I felt was worth being photographed. I shoot a bit of everything from portraits, landscapes, street, product, etc. It wasn’t until 2021 when I thought about wanting to become a concert/tour photographer after attending Harry Styles’ show for Love On Tour and seeing his photographer at the time Anthony Pham’s work. Something about his photos just drew me to the idea of wanting that to be my career. I love music, I love going to concerts, and I love taking photos and capturing memories. I decided to take my photography seriously after joining the workshop of Harry’s second photographer, Lloyd Wakefield. I’ve always believed that taking photos captures and presses pause on memories to hold on to forever. What I’m most proud of would probably be coming as far as I have in almost the past year of starting up photography again and always trying to pick myself back up when I’ve been discouraged because being in the photography industry is very tough and can be very competitive.

Have you ever had to pivot?
As I mentioned in my previous prompts, I am very indecisive when it comes to what I want to do with my life, from wanting to be a doctor, a wedding photographer, a YouTuber/“influencer”, an Olympic gymnast, a singer, a backup dancer, an actress, a nurse, a preschool teacher, a writer, and now a photographer. I switched my college major at least 5/6 times before I just settled with studying General Studies which is a bit of every subject.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I’d say my goal in driving my journey is putting myself back out there and getting to showcase my work to get where I want to be which is touring and traveling with an artist or a band and making new experiences and capturing not only memories for myself but for others as well.
