Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rachel Bowers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Rachel, thanks for joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Being successful can take on many different meanings, but to me it means taking pride in my work and always putting in my best efforts to help my clients. If I take my time planning, filming, and editing a video to create something that best represents what message my client is trying to convey, then I believe that we have achieved success together (whether the video goes viral or not!).
Rachel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Rachel Bowers and I’m a videographer in Atlanta, GA. For the majority of my life, video has been my passion. Thanks to some truly talented teachers and role models, I have been able to learn, practice, and strengthen my skills in this field. When I started seeing the joy my videos bring to others, I decided to found my own production company and name it Palmetto Films in honor of my home state of South Carolina. My husband, Kenny, is also a huge part of this company; he is often my second shooter and helps with the financial side of our business.
The mission of Palmetto Films is to provide you with videos that reflect your unique personality and style in every way possible. With the help of my assistants and the unwavering support of my friends and family, I am able to shoot, edit, and create videos that highlight all the wonderful things in life that mean the most to you. I’m able to assist with a variety of needs, from preserving memories of an intimate event to creating video content to help a small business grow.
I provide video services for events, elopements, festivals, family gatherings, parties, concerts, music videos, and more! I also create video content for companies to post on their websites and social media accounts to help grow their business.
My video career began all the way back in high school when I started working on my high school news show. My passion for all things video continued into college; I’m a graduate of Clemson University (go Tigers!) and worked for Clemson Athletic Video Services as well as the Clemson University Broadcast Productions. I started Palmetto Films in 2016 as a “side gig” while working full-time in marketing. In 2018, as my business demanded more and more of my time, I decided to start running Palmetto Films full time and never looked back. In 2020, I became a mom to the smartest, fiercest little girl you’ve ever met. In my spare time, I love to hike, camp, read, watch indie movies, drink at breweries, play with our two mutts, and spend too much money at bookstores.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I’ve found the most effective strategy for growing my clientele is simply putting myself out there and simply introducing myself to people/businesses I’d like to work with. I’ll reach out, briefly introduce myself, and offer one free video. The only thing I ask for in return is for the client to keep me in mind for future projects. Offering a bit of my service for free almost serves as a kind of job interview and I’ve earned many paying projects from this technique! It also keeps my skills sharp when business is slow and keeps me moving and creating relationships. Cold-calling is awkward but that’s okay, honestly – the worst they can ever say is no!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love when a client LOVES their video! Making their vision come to life is an important responsibility and I take every project seriously. When I create something that makes my client happy – something they are excited to share and watch over and over again – I know I’ve done my job well and that’s something I can be proud of!
