We recently connected with Rachel Boehm and have shared our conversation below.
Rachel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
There was a moment in my first year in business that ended up so transformational that it closes my memoir. It launched me out of the person I was, and into the person I have become…am becoming.
I was at the first conference for the business that my online franchise is partnered with. I was sitting in my dress on the floor of the convention center, the carpet thin and hard, huddled over pages in a blank notebook, pen in hand, ready to write words of wisdom from the consultants who had been in this longer, who had achieved success, who could tell me all the things I needed to do and be to reach my own heights.
I needed to sit there, however awkward, because I needed the wall charger. It was the first empty charger I had found all day, and the situation was getting dire. As dire as one’s near dead phone battery can be relatively speaking to actual problems in the world.
Phone charging, pen poised, I started expectantly at the stage. The presentation began and I started scribbling. And then I stopped. I didn’t write the words “duh” but I said them to myself. The points on customer support seemed so obvious. Is this what the whole session was going to be? I already figured this out by myself, I thought. This is common sense.
And then it hit me, as if all at once. As if the universe had not been giving me little signs all along but had waited until this one moment to smack me on the head and say, “You are capable. You’ve got this.” And right there, in that moment, despite so many other unknowns and likely missteps ahead, I decided. I would be the best consultant I could possibly be. I would act as if I was already the consultant and team leader I wanted to be. I would act as if I was there until I really was.
Only later, studying behavioral psychology, did I realize there was a legitimate theory to why this posture works. “Act as if” is truly the only way to become. The only way to get better at something is to start doing it. The only way to build confidence in something is to do it and develop mastery.
Often we wait to start because we don’t have confidence. We think we will start once we feel ready. The thing, is you are never ready. Confidence never comes before the start.
Rachel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am obsessed with helping individuals feel confident in their bodies and their life. I have a background in several fields including health/well-being for individuals and organizations, and communications. And I know what it’s like to look in the mirror and not like what you see. I also know what it’s like to look at your life and think, this is wrong. How did I get here? How did I get so stuck?
In either case, it can feel like there are no clear options to bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be. That’s what I help people do. I discovered a business project that allowed me to bridge my gaps. And now I get to pay it forward and help other people use it to do the same.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
When I first started my business, I was unaware the degree to which my previous careers and education would transfer. The one thing I knew about sales, so I thought, was what it was like to be a consumer. I don’t know why this particular industry came to mind but I made a commitment to myself and my future clients: I would never get so caught up in recruiting new clients that I wouldn’t equally love on my current clients. I wouldn’t be a cell phone company. I guess it often feels like some industries, for example cell phone services, throw deals only to new clients and not current. Like your loyalty is punished. I never wanted a client to feel like that. So I try to show my love and appreciation for my current clients throughout the year with notes, gifts, samples, discounts, education, and more.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Aside from my business coach, who has been absolutely incredible in helping me grow to the next level, I am a fan of John Maxwell’s books. There are many books that have helped me grow personally and professionally. However, I really enjoy Maxwell’s writing style and focus points. A couple of others that I suggest to my team and other individuals depending on the situation are: Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway and You Are a Badass.
