We recently connected with Rachel Bell and have shared our conversation below.
Rachel , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Honestly, it started with my last management position. I loved directing a business to success and interacting and helping customers. I had done it for almost 8 years. It was towards the end it became very stressful. I started to realize that no matter what I did, how hard I worked, I couldn’t change the direction the company was headed. I also realized that I wanted something that I could be proud of. I had thoughts about what I could do instead but every thing was pointing to having something I could run myself. It was the help of my wife who pushed me to go after what I wanted. It was extremely scary but I knew it had to be done. I have always had a passion for cannabis. I went to school for it. I knew their had to be a future for us in this industry, we just had to find the right avenue. Ultimately, my last job tried punishing me for spending time with my family. I knew right then and there, I had to take that risk. I knew I had to become my own boss. I left and took the risk to try and start our own business. It has been an uphill battle, but 2 years later it was absolutely worth taking the risk!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
At Her Seed Bank, we want to put the power of the plant in the people’s hands. We have had a passion for cannabis for a long time. New York has really botched legalizing cannabis on both medical and adult use side. I worked in the medical side, and saw how hard it was for people to afford or to be able to get scripts. To this day, New York is still screwing up. Our business is here to help people get the cannabis they need and can afford by doing it all themselves. Our company helps people be able to grow the plant right in their backyard. We offer everything needed to grow at home. Our focus is supplying the right genetics and education for growing so that people don’t have to rely on others. We offer top quality genetics from across the world. We have consultations to see if your house is set up to grow and accommodate. We offer classes for basic education on growing. People get turned off thinking they can’t do it or afford it, we are here to help people understand that you can do it! Like I said before, we want the power of the plant in the people’s hands and we are here to help!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Our first business name and logo took us a long time to come up with and we absolutely loved it. A year into our business Futurama, the tv show, purchases their trade mark again. We had built this brand with the intention of possibly getting that trademark because it was expiring. Low and behold, in todays world, they decide to reboot the show. We had to totally switch our brand, our name, our social media, our following. It was heartbreaking because everybody and all our customers loved our logo and name. But here we are a year later and we are still kicking strong. It took a lot of work to essentially do it all over but we remained strong and diligent. We overcame that speedbump.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Asking for help has always been a hard thing for me. Through out my life, I had always been able to manage or figures things out in my own way. I would put my mind to work to solve any problem and most of the time I could do it. When it came to starting my own business, I soon realized, that was going to be impossible. It was a very hard thing to unlearn for me. There was no way I was going to be able to do this on my own. There is so many things that go into play that I had no clue or no knowledge on how to accomplish it. It took some time to learn how to say “I need help” but I am grateful I did.
