We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rachel Anzelmi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rachel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you take vacations? Why or why not?
Taking vacations as a small business owner who runs a creative business is crucial for maintaining inspiration and preventing burnout. Stepping away from daily routines allows for fresh perspectives. Often visiting a new place will bring out new ideas which can invigorate my work.. As a mom of two little girls, taking time off provides an opportunity to recharge mentally and physically. Prioritizing downtime not only benefits personal well-being but also contributes to the longevity and success of the business.

Rachel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello! I’m Rachel, the proud owner and designer behind The Redhead Design Shop, where creativity meets craftsmanship. With over 6 years of experience in designing and crafting laser-cut decor and gifts, I’ve curated a diverse collection that celebrates life’s moments and local inspirations. My journey began with a degree in Architecture, which laid the foundation for my passion in design and build. Drawing from my background, I infuse architectural precision into every piece I create, ensuring both aesthetic appeal and structural integrity.
In 2016, I launched my Etsy shop with digital downloads, quickly expanding to include a broader range of products. Since then, I’ve evolved, learned, and grown, now selling on multiple platforms and catering to custom orders – specializing in wedding decor. Many of my designs are inspired by local culture and personal experiences. Each item I design tells a story rooted in cherished memories and local inspiration.
Among my favorite projects are custom wedding decor pieces. Collaborating with local couples and venues, I’ve had the pleasure of creating unique signage and decor that adds a personal touch to their special day. It’s incredibly fulfilling to contribute to such joyous celebrations!

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Growing your clientele by collaborating with other small businesses is essential for expanding your reach and building a supportive community. Partnerships can lead to cross-promotion, allowing you to tap into new audiences and benefit from shared resources.. By working together, you can create a great business relationship but also great friendships. Collaborating fosters strong relationships within the local business ecosystem, leading to referrals and increased trust among potential clients.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Yes, there is a great book I came across early in my small business career called “Mind your Business” by Ilana Griffo.. This book serves as a valuable resource for anyone looking to transform their side gig into a full-time venture and offers practical exercises and actionable strategies that help clarify your goals, identify your target audience, and develop a solid business plans. After a couple years of having my creative business, I repurchased the book to do again but with a more experienced mindset. Truly this book helped me look at my goals not only as a small business owner but also as a person with life goals.
