We recently connected with Rachel Adelicia and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rachel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
There are days when I wonder if it would be easier to have a “real job”. This usually happens when I’m worried I making the wrong choices for something business related, or am a bit tired of wearing all the hats. Then, I realize that owning my own company lets me be as creative as I want, that the mistakes I make are mine to fix, and that I wouldn’t want it any other way!
Rachel , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I own a fashion blog, InvestmentPiece, where we focus on story telling through fashion. I’m a firm believer that we’re all storytellers, and that fashion is means with which we can own and tell our stories. And all of our stories matter! I provide outfit inspo, design and fashion history, shopping recommendations, offer personal shopping and styling sessions, and encourage all of us to use our clothes in ways that tell stories. I’m also a classically trained actress who acts in film and on stage.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I think to build any audience you have to be consistent. And you have to be a little vulnerable – which can be scary when so much of social media, etc, are highlight reels! However, I find the more I open up and am honest with my audience, from my fashion fails to real thoughts, the more my audience grows. I’m so grateful that my audience is still growing! I have so much fun interacting and getting inspiration from them!
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
It was actually my mom’s idea to start a fashion blog! I’ve always been into fashion and involved with various vintage and shopping communities. I was the friend people took shopping or stopped on the street to ask where I got something. At the time, I was supporting my acting career by owning a tutoring company. However, the fashion blog seemed so me! If you go back and read some of our first posts, you can tell that it took a minute to find my voice, as well as keeping up with blogging and social media trends. However, the blog began to grow. We’ve secured several brand partnerships, from more local companies such as Elaine Kim Collection and international shoe brand Sarah Flint. I’ve hosted several successful pop-ups and continue to grow my audience. It’s been thrilling to get to do what I love and make a living at it!
