Rachel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Day to day the world can seem like a tough place, but there’s also so much kindness in the world and we think talking about that kindness helps spread it and make the world a nicer, kinder place. Can you share a story of a time when someone did something really kind for you?
Throughout my professional journey, I’ve had the privilege of meeting and serving some of Raleigh’s finest clients. Being behind the salon chair allows ample time to genuinely connect with each guest and understand them on a deeper level. I’ve had the opportunity to offer services that make my guests feel at ease, empowered, self-assured, and radiant. Over time, my guests have also enriched my journey. They’ve brought laughter, bestowed thoughtful gifts, provided the patience for my growth and skill refinement, and unwaveringly backed my business endeavors. Reflecting on the most generous gesture I’ve received brings me back to the challenging times of the 2020 pandemic, which led to the closure of my business, as well as countless others. This period stirred up intense emotions, notably the anxiety surrounding uncertainty and the unknown.
This was a feeling both myself and my clients were experiencing. The majority of my clientele opt for extensions or semi-permanent hair replacements, requiring regular in-salon maintenance to ensure their upkeep. The uncertainty of the shutdown duration was particularly tough for clients dealing with hair loss and thinning, heightening their concerns during this time.
There are a few moments during this time that I will never forget. The first appointment I had to cancel during the pandemic was for a client who was scheduled for her first set of extensions following chemotherapy recovery. Both she and I were deeply saddened by this cancellation. I felt like I was failing her after she had already endured so much in her battle against cancer. Rather than reacting to the situation beyond my control, she not only showed me grace but also generously offered to pay in full in advance, understanding the financial challenges I would face during this time. Despite still being able to work herself, she empathetically acknowledged my inability to do so and selflessly extended her support. This marked the beginning of numerous instances where my clients extended their support during this challenging period. Following our reopening, despite my rigorous efforts and precautions, I contracted Covid-19. Taking any time away from my business after the prolonged closure was deeply disheartening. It was also difficult to inform my clients about my illness. However, once again, I was met with kindness. One of my clients graciously offered to send food to my home for myself and my family. Reflecting on the kindness I’ve received, it ultimately comes down to the simple act of taking care of one another as fellow human beings. Whether as a community, friends, or in client-customer relationships, we’re all navigating this journey together. It means the world to me that my guests have shown me the same level of care and support that I strive to provide them.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The majority of our clientele comes from word of mouth. Hearing about the positive experiences of friends, coworkers, or family members inspires others to visit our salon. Another significant portion of our growth has originated from social media. In today’s society, people enjoy familiarizing themselves with a business and its team before physically visiting. Through social media platforms, individuals have had the opportunity to see us, engage with us, and establish a sense of comfort with us prior to their in-person experience.
