We were lucky to catch up with Rachael Hanible recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rachael , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, folks often look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight – but that often obscures all the nitty, gritty details of everything that went into the growth phase of your business. We’d love to hear about your scaling story and how you scaled up?
The first thing I did was change my own personal finances. I wanted to be my own client. I went from poor to financially free. Became debt free, Saved a years’ worth of my income in cash and reached an 800 credit score. I needed to know it was possible. From there I started helping others for free. I would meet people at their homes, sit down at their dinner table and document their issues, feelings and struggles with money. I would teach them about credit, help them create a budget and savings plan. I made sure I listened to their problems and gave them real solutions that would fit their lifestyle. I never wanted to give the people what I wanted them to have, I wanted to give them what they felt they needed the most.
From there, I would ask them to share my information with anyone they feel may need help finding peace in their finances.
Now 90% of my clients come from word of mouth. I don’t have to ask anymore. They keep my calendar full without having to advertise or promote my business.
Rachael , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up poor in a single parent home. The hope was low and the crime was high in my neighborhood. Everyone was struggling financially. I started to teach myself about money, how to earn it, make it grow, and pass it down. I paid off almost $100k of debt and saved up a years’ worth of income. Currently my credit score is 846. It was difficult to say no to certain things to save money. Most of the people around me called me crazy and plenty of other names because I wanted to do something different. I really believed I could be financially free.
I am proud of myself. I kept going even in the rough days. I kept the bigger picture in mind. I am so happy I did.
Now I am the Best Selling Author of Amber’s Magical Savings Box a children’s book about money. I created my own Personal Finance Curriculum that has been in almost 100 schools and programs. I am also the Founder of Missing Peace Financial Group. Next year makes 10 years I have been helping children and adults on the road to financial freedom.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I always make sure I am on time (early most of the time). I always give more than what people paid for. I find ways to go the extra mile. I am kind to everyone. Everyone is important to me. I am consistent and honest. I make sure I show appreciation to those who support me, trust me with their finances and give me opportunities.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that the system is set up for people like me to fail. Black women are made to feel like we don’t belong in certain spaces. Poor people are made to believe that we can’t beat the system that it set up for us to struggle through life and die with nothing. I went through a process of unlearning that. I am worthy of wealth, peace, abundance, real love and everything life has to offer.
