Rabia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Any advice for creating a more inclusive workplace?

Coming from a diverse background and having lived in different countries, it is extremely important for me to make beauty accessible to all humans irrespective of their race, skin tone, body type, sexual identity, gender, religion, age or ability.

Having a diverse group of artists in my team has helped me in making better business decisions and in understanding of the customer’s values and authenticity to provide representation.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

From as far back as I can remember – I’ve always had the curiosity and passion for beauty, art, and fashion, which have been influencing factors in my life from a very early age. I remember as a child always playing with my mom’s makeup and applying it to myself and others. I started my makeup career professionally working for Estee Lauder as a Beauty Advisor & Skincare Consultant. That’s when I felt my interest and passion for makeup as a creative outlet and art form grew tremendously! While working for the brand, I realized I enjoyed helping people and becoming a freelance makeup artist and an esthetician was a great place to be in the beauty industry. I got myself into a Cosmetology School to become a licensed Esthetician and also took some makeup courses to further polish my skills. The Makeup artistry world is full of creative individuals and for me to start as a freelancer and then go on to create the brand – Makeup by Bia – was a big step! Every client and their skin is unique, giving me the opportunity to draw from my training and experience to guide them and make them feel great! I currently reside in Austin, TX where I am actively involved in growing my brand Make Up by Bia, which now caters to clientele from all across Texas. I also work with MAC Cosmetics and create content on Instagram & Tiktok @makeupbybia, sharing makeup looks, reviews and tips on makeup and skincare products.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?

Social media is one of the major tools for networking and constructing your business as a freelance Makeup Artist.

I feel Instagram and Facebook are the two most important visual tools for a makeup artist to not only showcase their portfolio with the best work but to also attract potential clients. I built my audience on social media by consistently posting not only great quality images but by also sharing valuable tips with my followers.

For those just starting to build social media presence, I suggest starting with posting pictures of clients, if they approve, posting pictures of themselves, of their studio, and of anything that could interest their audience like makeup or skincare tips.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

Beauty industry is large, and filled with so many people doing the exact same thing, some better than the others. What makes someone stand out in this industry, is the ability to do that which others are doing, and excel greatly while at it.

I believe my biggest strength as a makeup artist is my ability to work with all types of clients. I am always willing to learn, listen and try new techniques when working with someone who has special needs or wants something different than what they usually get. For example, I once worked with a client who was allergic to most cosmetics. She wanted a bold look for her wedding day, so we had to find a way to make it safe for her skin. It took some extra time and effort, but she loved her final look.
