Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rabbi Shlomo and Rivka Slatkin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rabbi Shlomo and Rivka , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Is there a heartwarming story from your career that you look back on?
Rivka and I started having marriage challenges when we had our first child. Sleepless nights didn’t help! We found an Imago relationship therapist and after one session, fell back in love with each other with our lives having changed forever. I went on to pursue advanced training in Imago therapy and Rivka joined me in creating TheMarriageRestorationProject.com, a global initiative to help couples going through similar challenges.
Rabbi Shlomo and Rivka , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Rivka’s parent’s divorce when she was in her formative years left a lasting impression on her- it motivated her to co-found our global website TheMarriageRestorationProject.com- creating innovative programs that break the mold of traditional therapy that often is unsuccessful in saving marriages.
We’re proud of how our 2 day intensive program helps give couples clarity on very confusing situations so that they can make decisions out of a place of calm rather than fight/flight. Countless families have been saved as a result.
Being that our own marriage almost broke up (1 or more times!), we know what it’s like to do this work and why Imago therapy is different than any other couples therapy modality. There’s a reason why it works and doing it precisely in the way that we’ve designed is a strong factor in couples’ success.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Not only did our marriage experience a near breakdown when we were first married, but there were multiple times that occurred- even after becoming relationship “experts”! We had to go back to basics and put ourselves through our own process until we were both able to identify what was lacking in our relationship so that needs could be met and our marriage and business could sustain and survive! Thankfully, that clarity came and we are proud of our conscious relationship.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Being curious and coachable to learn what it takes to become a person that makes others feel good- being emotionally safe to be around- is something that can help anyone succeed at anything in life. When you can listen and communicate well, truly hearing others without shame or blame, you become a person that is emotionally safe, that others wish to be around and share with.
