We were lucky to catch up with Raam Band recently and have shared our conversation below.
RAAM, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
My journey in music began around age 10, when I started making mixtapes using two cassette players connected manually. I’d spend hours blending tracks and experimenting with sounds, then sell these tapes to my friends. That was around 1997. By 1999, I was performing publicly, and by 2000, my DJing skills had gained recognition within my school community.
In 2003, at age 16, I took my passion to the next level, moving to the Red Sea area to pursue music full-time. I became a resident DJ at hotels and resorts, connecting with other DJs and selling music, which helped build my network. Reflecting on those early mixtapes, I realize they taught me so much about mixing, the art of blending sounds, and how music can move people. Those early years shaped the artist I am today.
RAAM, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m RAAM BAND, a musical artist, DJ, and producer known for blending traditional African sounds with modern beats. My journey began in Alexandria, Egypt, around 1997, when I started making mixtapes manually with two cassette players and selling them to friends. By 1999, I was DJing for the public and, by 2003, was performing as a resident DJ in the Red Sea area, building my network by selling music to other DJs. Over time, I’ve evolved into a pioneer of the Afro-house movement, merging traditional African sounds with contemporary music to create an immersive experience that connects people globally.
My music fuses deep underground house, tech, and traditional elements like Swahili vocals, African percussion, and Oriental strings, inspired by Afro-beats, Latin rhythms, and Eastern melodies. I aim to create a rich, multicultural sound journey that celebrates heritage and unites people across cultures.
What sets me apart is my dedication to preserving and celebrating African and Eastern musical heritage. I’m committed to evolving creatively and pushing the boundaries of my sound to create memorable experiences that resonate with audiences worldwide. Whether performing live, producing new tracks, or collaborating with other artists, my goal is to bridge communities through music, celebrating our shared humanity.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
A defining moment in my journey was my choice to merge traditional African sounds with modern beats—a bold move at a time when mainstream genres dominated. In the Red Sea area, I realized that audiences were accustomed to familiar, conventional music, and there wasn’t much room for experimentation. But I had a vision to blend deep underground house, tech, and traditional African elements like Swahili vocals, Oriental strings, and percussion into a unique sound. I wanted to take listeners somewhere new, with a mix that honored heritage while breaking musical boundaries.
At first, the response was mixed. Some didn’t understand the fusion, and there were moments of doubt—even from myself. But I stayed true to my vision. I spent countless hours refining my sound, experimenting with beats, and finding ways to make diverse musical traditions flow together naturally. Gradually, audiences began to connect with the music, embracing the journey I was offering.
This experience taught me the importance of resilience and belief in one’s craft. By staying committed to my vision, I was able to carve out a unique place in the music scene and create a sound that’s recognized as “The Sound of Africa.” Today, I’m proud to be bridging cultures through music, and it all started with taking a risk and staying resilient in the face of challenges.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is the connection I get to create with people through my music. There’s something incredibly powerful about seeing a crowd come alive, dancing together, and feeling the collective energy of a set. When I’m on stage and people from all backgrounds unite to the same beat, it reaffirms why I do this. Music can transcend barriers, making people feel seen, connected, and understood—even if just for a moment.
It’s also deeply fulfilling to hear from fans who say my music has impacted them, perhaps by helping them feel more connected to their roots or getting them through a difficult time. Knowing that my art can bring joy, comfort, or inspiration is the greatest reward I could ask for as an artist.
