We were lucky to catch up with Quintin Tyevon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Quintin , thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project that I’ve released to date as an artist would be “No Self Pity”, an EP that I released in January of 2019. This project meant a lot because of what it took in order to put this product together. It took about two years in order to accurately convey the thoughts and feelings that I went through at this confusing time after becoming aware of my surroundings on a deeper level. Being an artist we are often faced with adversity, doubt, and many other things that can cause us to ultimately walk away from pursuing becoming a music artist. From soulful records like Po Hustlin to party records like “Lit”, there was a lot to digest. Making these records came from some happy moments and others were disappointing but still provided a lesson that will be remembered along this journey. A lot of my biggest moments before the shutdown with covid came because of this project. After releasing “No Self Pity” it has since been my most streamed project along with some my best video production as well. This led to landing a distribution deal with Equity distribution October 2020.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I began writing music at a young age. I fell in love with RnB before I began writing raps to cope with the ups and downs of life. When writing raps became an outlet, I quickly began to form relationships with a lot of local young rappers in the Jonesboro, Georgia area. A community just south of Atlanta, Georgia. After graduating high school it took 4 years before I would actually release my first official project entitled “B.U.Y.” which stood for “Biggest Underdog Yet”. At the end of 2018 I created the independent record label of UnderclassXIX (Underclass’19) in order to not only have something for myself but to create a safe space for other artist who felt as if they may not have a place to create the music they actually want instead of the social norm or whats popular. Although UnderclassXIX would still be in its early stages as far as a record label, we are most proud of a project released earlier this year by our artist Genjo, The Fried Rice King entitled “Lit” and. We pride ourselves on being able to help artist facilitate their ideas and make them a reality. Our motto at Underclassxix is “For The People”. Although it would be very broad we are in the business of ensuring that we’re intentional and helping pushing the culture forward that we chose to be apart of. What sets us aside from other artist in our realm would be that we are unapologetically us at all times. In a world full of opinions constantly being thrown around and the need to be politically correct, now is the perfect time to stand behind what you believe in. We are currently working on cultivating new talents as well as releasing debut albums from myself and Genjo, The Fried Rice King.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I had a mentor. As an artist there are many resources out here to help you get paid and make revenue from your music. You just have to ensure that you are putting in the work to provide the data and information needed. There are places that will provide you advances based on your performances of previous releases. Sync opportunities are good strategies to build budgets for albums, and colleges are great places to connect with young entrepreneurs who can help bridge gaps in certain departs that an artist may require.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarded aspect of being a creative would be when I make heartfelt connections with people who enjoy my music. Success can be determined by many factors but when you have real people that stand behind you, it makes you appreciate your music even more while finding new ways to inspire and uplift those who enjoy what we have to offer.
