We were lucky to catch up with Quinnita Faith Edwards recently and have shared our conversation below.
Quinnita Faith, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Is your team able to work remotely? If so, how have you made it work? What, if any, have been the pitfalls? What have been the non-obvious benefits?
As crazy and unexpected as the pandemic was, it genuinely was one of the best things to happen for me career wise. I’m typically someone who is used to working in a corporate environment, but right before Covid hit, I was let go from my job. At the time, I thought that it was going to emotionally leave me in shambles – and for a while, it did. But it also allowed me time to get reacquainted with parts of myself that I had hidden. And as a creative, it ended up being a liberating and cathartic experience.
Working a 9 to 5 can be so constricting and constraining at times, that I often felt like I was in a box. Having to find my footing during the pandemic meant that I had more liberty and room to try different routes and avenues, such as working remotely. Once that door opened, it allowed me the freedom to pursue something that I always wanted to try, but never had the guts to– working as a Social Media Coordinator.
As someone who loves Social Media and all of the ways that it can be utilized to connect us to one another, the pandemic truly drove this concept to higher heights. It became important that people, businesses and organizations reached their audiences in a way that made them feel connected during times where that wasn’t possible. As a Social Media Coordinator, I was able to do just that and help companies develop and cultivate spaces for others to gather and feel included without having to leave their home.
Quinnita Faith, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I often like to think of myself as a whimsical being, as I am extremely imaginative and known as an “extra” kind of person. I try my best to channel all of that “extra-ness” into all of the things that I create.
For as long as I can remember, I have been building and creating worlds and as I have gotten older, the ways in which I do this fluctuate. I write, I act, I make costumes, I create, I EXPRESS! In whatever I present, my goal is always the same — to create a space that allows others the opportunity to escape and get lost, just as I do.
When others look at me and my brand, I want them to see authenticity at its fullest. I want them to be able to look back at themselves and feel a little more at ease in their skin, with their quirks and in their giftings.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’m one of those people who believe that quality is way more important than quantity. My focus for building my audience has always been more about building COMMUNITY. It’s important to make the people who follow you feel like supporters, and not just numbers. You have to ask yourself: What’s my goal for putting this out? You need more than just likes to motivate you. Your audience can see when you are genuine and when you’re just trying to appease the algorithm gods.
So for those starting out, focus more on what you’re putting out and making sure it’s authentic. When you can show people who you really are and genuinely connect with them, it builds trust and loyalty.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
So, I’m going to be honest and say that it took me over an hour to answer this question. I wanted to write something deep and profound, that didn’t seem cliche, and then it hit me. The most rewarding aspect of being a creative, is just…being. I can just exist. Being a creative means that when I look in the mirror, not only do I see a reflection of who I am in that moment, but who I want to become. If I want to be deep and profound, then that’s just who I am. If I want to be quirky and wear purple hair, then that’s who I am too.
