Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to QUINCY SUTTON. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, QUINCY thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Have you signed with an agent or manager? Why or why not?
Yes I am represented by an international illustration Agency called Illustration X. A friend shared my work to an Agent, and the Agent reached out to me. I have always wanted to work with an Agency so I could share my talent with a wider audience. I think Illustration X decide to represent me because of my versatility. I have a striking illustration style and also a live event painting style. Im one of the few if not only artist that is represented as a live event artist and an illustration artist.

QUINCY, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Im Originally from Columbus, Ohio, I was formally educated at the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD), majoring in Illustration. My professional career began as a caricature artist at amusement parks in Ohio, which led me to journey across the country in pursuit of a career in animation. Since leaving Ohio I gained professional experiences as a character artist, graphic designer, illustrator, fashion designer, and Art Director at companies such as Jerry Leigh, MGA Entertainment, Alpine Stars, Fox Entertainment, FUNKO and The Walt Disney Company, I currently works as an illustrator,Portrait Artist and Pop Artist living in Japan.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started my career as an art for hire and caricature art professional but at some point I thought that I needed to work at a corporate job to be considered a professional so I quit freelancing and pursued the corporate world, I had great success and gained a huge amount of experience in fields from toys consumer products and fashion to advertising and mobile. But deep inside I was a true artist and I felt I was not good enough to support myself and work on my own, so I pursued full time work as much as possible and tried to work on my personal art on the side. My talent was always evident, but I knew deep down inside I wanted to be my own artist so I decided I was going to leave a secure job and only work as a freelance artist.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I had to go back and forth between freelance and fulltime work for over 7 years until I finally believed in myself enough to do it. I was waiting until I was guaranteed enough work to become a freelance artist but there was never a guarantee of that only a guarantee that I was not going to give up.
There has been some rough times but I made it through. Until this day I still do not know how each month will work out but I got rid of the fear and desperation and just trusted that things will be fine and that made more of a difference than all the worrying and late night working combined.
