We were lucky to catch up with Quincy Seymore recently and have shared our conversation below.
Quincy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Starting out as a writer, my pen was mightier than anyone knew. I poured my soul into every song, on every beat my nephew made. The music called me from behind the scenes to the spotlight, and soon I was spinning tracks as a DJ, igniting trap waves with helping artist be heard. The jump to A&R wasn’t just a job shift—it was a revelation. I had an ear for talent, spotting future stars where others saw only raw potential.
But I wasn’t content to stop there. My desire is to shape the music industry from the top-down, to build something bigger than myself. To give independent artist a platform like no other, that wants to see them win and keep winning. I took the plunge, diving headfirst into the turbulent waters of entrepreneurship. Armed with nothing but my drive and the unwavering support of my CTO, Young Dyno, I set out to create an international distribution company.
Mentorship from legends like Tobin Costen, armed me with industry wisdom and connections. I got my hands dirty, doing mixtapes for the New No Limit and crafting visuals with Just Shoot Films and Hoodcertifieddjs. Each step was a lesson, each setback a springboard to new heights.
Then, the world shifted. COVID-19 struck, disrupting routines and plans. Instead of succumbing to the chaos, I saw an opportunity. Tired of schedules dictated by others, I bet on myself. Pouring in over $28,000 of my own money, I launched my music distribution company. This wasn’t just a business move—it was a declaration of independence, a testament to my resilience and faith in my vision.
Against the odds, I climbed, using every bit of knowledge and every connection. The giants in the industry loomed, but my spirit is unshakeable. From writer to DJ to A&R to owner, my journey was a symphony of risks, determination, and triumphs. And through it all, Young Dyno stood by my side, a technological wizard ensuring the backbone of my dream was strong.
In the end, my story isn’t just about a company; it’s about creating a legacy, inspiring others to bet on themselves and their dreams. Living Legacy, indeed. What’s next on my horizon?
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My Name Is Quincy Seymore Im the Founder of Baghead Distribution and a host of other companies including Living Legacy which is a Time Capsul Service. Prior Marine Corps, I’ve always was taught to bet on myself. From HoodUnited Entertainment to Hoodcertifieddjs I always believed I had what it takes to be successful. As Bageadhead Distribution we believe that artist should be free to create without limits. That their art should be heard worldwide. With a customer service and sales background. I realized the artist were not being treated fairly and that most companies just wanted to take their money and make them a bunch of false promises. Bagheaf Distribution is not just about distributing the artist, we want to help the artist build their brand and fan base so they can win without the industry locking them into a deal they will never make money off of. I’m proud that we offer independent artist a way to create a income with their music with our Pulse Concert shows. I’m proud that after 3 years we are still here building bridges and connecting the dots for our partners. What sets us apart from other Distribution companies is that were small enough where we actually build with our clients and offer them a host of services to help them learn about the industry and grow as artist. But were international so were large enough to help them reach everyplace the majors do. With our A&R Director and Shala 1st Lady Holmes. Baghead is ready to start hiring A&Rs and helping artist develop more. My equation I live by is energy × effort = work and work = results. We will help those who want to help themselves. If an artist has the energy, effort and work ethic Baghead Distribution can take them to the next level.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The reason I decided to stop being a dj is I realized the opportunities were limited for major radio. Though I had my radio foe a couple years. I wasn’t making any real money. So I took an A&R position with Sony Red at the time now The Orchard. It was very fulfilling knowledge wise. But i saw so many artist not being the attention they deserved. I stayed feeling like no one in the industry actually cared about the artist themselves. So I took the leap of faith and started Baghead Distribution. I didn’t know anything about distribution so it took a lot of long days and nights with no sleep. Just to learn the ins and outs of the industry. My closest friends didn’t believe at first, but look where we are at now.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I had to learn in this business is everyone is not sincere. People are not going to look out for you in this industry and is your own fault of you don’t know what’s going on. This is a 24/7 job. My company does business out of California but is based out of Australia. So though i thought i was great at it , I soon realized I sucked with Time Management. You have to be honest with yourself as a business owner. I know I don’t have the money to compete with the majors in the industry. But passion, a good work ethic will , and a positive attitude will take you places and get you in rooms money can’t.
