We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Quincy Adams. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Quincy below.
Quincy, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Back in the early days of Hip Hop, I was a huge fan of Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew. That “Get Fresh” name stuck with me over the years but I didn’t know that it would become a household name for myself and others. I remember the Summer of 1999, getting prepared for the summer football program at Earlham College. My teammate from high school, Johnny Madison told me he was going to the same college. We became roommates at Earlham that summer. He used to freestyle rap over any beat or sound, so I started coming up with beats with my mouth or drumming on the desk and Johnny would do his thing. Over time, we did it so much we thought we should come up with a group name. We both liked “Get Fresh” and would be a perfect fit for the duo. The thought of being fresh is clearly a lifestyle thing and we believed at the time that everything we were doing around campus was original and fresh to everyone’s eyes and ears. Our ideas flowed naturally and fluid. We were a popular pair on campus!
2001 Johnny moved to California for opportunities in the filming industry and I remained in Indiana trying to find my way. 2007, while living in Indianapolis I found my way into the music industry producing my first song with Johnny. I sent the beat to him in Cali and he recorded the song. The name of the song we did was called, “Outta Control” and the engineer made it sound like a million bucks to me. That song was the very first beat I made into an MP3. and the beginning of the Get Fresh movement.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
What’s up yall! I’m Quincy Adams aka Beatz by Q. My hometown born and raised is Gary, Indiana known in 60’s and 70’s as Magic City, in the 90’s-00 as Gangsta Island, now a Ghost town in redevelopment. I am excited to see the change though. I want to eventually invest in my hometown. Currently residing in Indianapolis, In by way of Austin, Tx. Austin is where I like to do a lot of my networking and actually where I have grown my business and services since 2017. I got in involved in music production in the early 2000’s and expanded my brand services in to merch/apparel, creative art design, consulting and assisting in artist/brand development.
Get Fresh has partnered or has affiliation with companies like Trillist Ent, Canadian based record label, Logos and Promotions apparel manufacturing company in Bloomington, Indiana, HK&T Pretty Soap in Indiana, Bay Area Bistro in Fishers, In, Pugz Smoke and Vape in Peoria, Az, Sticker Mule and The Dutch Label Shop.
I think what sets Get Fresh apart from the others is that we are always looking for ways to do things in a fresh unique way. That creates originality and it’s something we seek in any project we are involved in.
I am most proud of the growth of Get Fresh LLC and our newest partner HK&T Pretty Soap. Pretty Soap is an organically homemade goatmilk soap made from oatmeal and almonds. Get Fresh will have signature soap available to order in 2024.
We love the unlimited ways we can expand the brand and we are available to connect, network and partner with like minded individuals from all areas. Our services are available upon requests.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is seeing the vision come to life after all the work has been put in. I am always pleased with the outcome and so are the clients we work with.
Have you ever had to pivot?
There was a time I had to pivot in life when I thought I would become a professional football athlete. It was the hardest time in my life. I did not have a plan once I knew football was not going to be my career. I was blessed with a whole lot of skills and talent so I had to put it to use. I fell in love with art in the 3rd grade and I always had a passion for music. The sound of the beats and lyrical content meshed together would touch my soul. The curiosity I had about how it was all created drove me to want to get the mix of things. The pivot was transitioning from a full time athlete to focusing on music and entertainment.
