We were lucky to catch up with Quiata Mitchell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Quiata, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with something countless entrepreneurs have had to figure out on the fly – how have you dealt with the rise of remote work?
Remote-work IS my company. Virtual Assistants help entrepreneurs, business owners, content creators, influencers, and so many others by working remotely; which ultimately saves the time, energy, and money for other things within their life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
In May of 2018, I graduated from Howard University in Washington, D.C. with a Bachelor’s Degree in Administration of Justice. My dream, even as a little girl, was to be an attorney so of course, after graduation, I returned home to continue my education. I went to North Carolina Central Law School for a year and unfortunately, I figured out that maybe that career wasn’t quite right for me. Still in love with law, I got my paralegal certification from Meredith College and got a job as a paralegal.
Simultaneously, we went on shut down because of COVID-19 restrictions and my mom had started her credit repair business. I started helping her out with some administrative things (emails, paperwork, etc.) as well as social media. One day, while we were working, she just looks at me and goes “you should do this for other people, ya know.” I’m stunned, because I didn’t even think something like this truly existed within the workspace. That same day, I did some research on what virtual assistants were, what they did, and I found out that it was a growing industry, especially since COVID-19 restrictions took place. Within that same week, I came up with a name for my business, created a logo, and filled out the paperwork to register Queen’s Virtual Services as an LLC.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
There has been a combination of books and videos that has greatly impacted my entrepreneurial thinking. and thinkings.
Atomic Habits by James Clear has been major in making sure that I incorporated habits of the person that I wanted to become. It didn’t just talk about what you should do, it teaches you how to really implement those habits by giving strategies, real life examples, and even worksheets if you wanted to go a step further and utilize the online resources to go with the book. Honestly, this book is one of my favorites. Its so easy to follow along with and I think everyone should read this if you need to incorporate more “good” habits into your day-to-day.
Another great book is called The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. The overall plot of this book is a man on a journey trying to find “his treasure.” Along this journey he learned a lot about hisself and he learned a number of lessons. This book was super helpful to me, because it taught me that although my journey isn’t always easy, its mine…. and I must stay true to me and my personal destiny and purpose. I loved this book and try to read it once in a while when I need that motivation and encouragement.
This last thing is actually a YouTube channel that I found to be super helpful as a new business owner; especially as a young, black woman. This YouTube channel, Erin on Demand, hosted by Erin Winters is channel for entrepreneurs and content creators who want to build their brand and business, specially through video content. A lot of her videos consisted of helpful tips on how to create great content, updates and information about her business, and even vlogs on her daily life. It was very important to me to see someone that looked like me, was around the same age as I was, and even someone who graduated from the same college do something like this. I loved her transparency, authenticity, and her drive to keep going. If you’re looking for business tips, inspiration, or just some really great content to watch you got to check out Erin. I know you won’t be disappointed.
Have you ever had to pivot?
To understand how I pivoted, you must know a little information about me and my business. I officially started Queen’s Virtual Services in early 2021 and since I was still working a 9-5 and had my mom as my main client, I was honesty comfortable…. A little too comfortable if you ask me. I had gotten too complacent with where I was. Although my mom and her business was a major client of mine, I still had other clients that I worked with and most of those came strictly from word of mouth and referrals. I had an instagram, but I didn’t use it. I was too afraid to post, too worried about what others would think.
Six months later, I have gained more clients, but I have also lost clients. I felt burned out and very close to saying that I this wasn’t going to work as a full time business. 2022 is now here and I know I have got to change something if I want to really grow. At that point, I decided that I needed to build a platform online and I had to get out of my head about not wanting to be embarrassed about promoting my own business. From that point on I made sure to attend at least one networking event (virtual or in-person) and to really dedicate myself to posting online. I bought a course from a “guru” in the industry to strengthen my skills as a virtual assistant and I even signed up for a couple one-on-one calls to talk specifically about my business strategies.
Now, in 2023, I’ve been able to hire a few other virtual assistants. I’ve turned my one-member LLC into an agency and I truly love it. Being an entrepreneur and business owner has allowed me to grow mentally, spiritually, and even physically. I’ve become more consistent, I actually believe in myself, and I can truly say I’ve changed for the better.
