Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Quiana Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Quiana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How do you feel about asking friends and family to support your business? What’s appropriate, what’s not? Where do you draw the line?
When it comes to your friends and family members supporting your business it seems simple, right? It can be the most difficult. Your friends and family are assuming that they must help you financially or spending money in some way. In actuality, something as simple as going on social media and posting or reposting can help so much. When I was starting out, I was hoping that some of my friends with little girls would be so excited to use my business, but that did not happen until years later. I am grateful for my family, because they have been so supportive of me and my business. I have had a cousin host parties for her daughter. My mother and my father have always been spreading the word since day one. That’s all it takes is for someone to open their mouth and share. That is absolutely free!!! We’re not asking for them to invest, just take a second and spread the word.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Quiana, owner of Pampering me Princess LLC. Pampering me Princess is a mobile party company that offers fun and affordable party planning for girls. We specialize in amazing parties fit for a princess. Some of our party packages include backing, painting, dancing, and spa activates.
In 2011 I decided to make a $600 decision to start my mobile party business. This decision did not come right away. I went to school for business and got my business degree. While in school I worked a retail position. Months after graduating I was promoted to a supervisor position. I worked years for a company that did not value me. When I was pregnant with my first child, I decided I would get a certification in event management. I knew that I would be great in putting together events for others. After having my child, I continue to work for this company that did not value me. After being there for six years I produced my business plan. I escape the nine to five. I gathered up $600 to start Pampering me Princess LLC. I walked away from a safe job to start my own business. This took faith and courage. By this time, I had one child and one on the way, but I did not let my fear interrupt my dreams. In the beginning there were lows along the way. Pain and long days, but I did not quit. I gave up going to events to work events. Today I have turned my $600 investment into a multiple six figure company. I now have over eleven plus years in the business with three vehicles in my fleet. In 2021 I added an event studio to the business as well.
I am so proud of my compliments thus far! I’m so happy that I’m able to show my kids what hard work and dedication looks like. My babies are my motivation and reason. My family has stuck by my side even though they did not understand sometimes. They always motivated me to continue to be myself and reach for my goals. I am truly living in my purpose.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One thing that I had to unlearn or in this case learn is that you cannot take on every client. I had a client contact me that lived over an hour and 30 minutes away. At that time, I would travel an hour away, so my thoughts were what is 30 more minutes. The client really liked my business and wanted to book the largest package that we offered at the time. I was super excited, but little did I know she also wanted to change half of things in the package. On party day we had made all the adjustments that she requested as well as drive an hour and 30 minutes away. The birthday girl and her guest enjoyed the party, however the client was still unhappy with our services. I now no longer bend any of my rules. My packages are my packages, my price is my price, and my travel is my travel.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
My best source for new clients has always been Google. I have done marketing in magazines and with the city. I do social media ads and collaborating with the schools in my area. You name it I have tried it. Google has always ranked above the rest. I ask every customer that contacts me how did you hear about us and eight out of ten times, it’s Google. For any businesses out here, if you do not have an online presence and you have not put yourself on Google business profile manager, do so now.
