We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Quiana Agbai a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Quiana, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
My company, Trifecta Media Group, came out of the areas of expertise that me and my sisters each have. I have a background in marketing, having worked both agency and client side, and one of my sisters is a publicist and the other is a graphic designer. Over the years my sisters and I would send one-off projects to each other, and one day my dad suggested we form a business. It was my husband who described us as a “trifecta” and in 2014 Trifecta Media Group was born.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My background in media planning and account management grew out of my time as a college intern at an agency in downtown Boston while I was attending Wellesley College. I always knew that I was intrigued by customer behavior and had majored in psychology with a minor in economics. Additionally, as a child growing up in Columbus, Ohio I also had an entrepreneurial leaning having watched my dad start his own company. I’d have lemonade stands each summer and once even opened a t-shirt design business with business cards and tabling at local crafting events. This followed me into my corporate career and once I had my 2nd child in 2014 and my husband’s job moved us from New York City to Portsmouth, NH I knew I wanted to keep a foot in the door on my career. Starting my own business grew out of wanting to have a flexible work experience to be accessible to my family as well as provide services to other small business owners who were also in need of more affordable accessible services – marketing, graphic design and PR. Most small businesses can’t afford the massive retainer fees to employ huge agencies, yet having had agency experience, Trifecta Media Group is able to scale these services down and provide them under one platform.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth has been the best source of new clients. My personal brand is Quiana.com and under that umbrella as a connector, communicator and consultant I interact in many offline and online spaces that bring such amazing clients to TMG. It’s great to wear a few different hats and allows me to cross-pollinate between my specialties.
Have you ever had to pivot?
TMG has always been virtual but coming out of the pandemic we saw marketing budgets dry up. We took a hiatus and found that in the wake of the 2020 protests once we turned the corner in 2021, many were seeking out diverse businesses like ours. It really has been a wave we’ve been trying to ride and has caused us to see the value in developing evergreen resources that can produce passive income. It’s something we’re working on.
