We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Queso Tone a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Queso, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
A risk I took was switching fully to the Pop genre. I started doing my music solely rapping and was always scared of what people would think if I started singing. However, around the time I started working on my album “Raw Ambition” I came up with the theme of breaking through chains. Making the music I’ve always wanted to make was a chain that had to be broken. And I’m glad I broke through that shackle.
Queso, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I always dreamt of being a multi-faceted performer and entertainer. It’s through the arts I found my voice as a child and I’ve always had a found appreciation for the freedom art gives me. I started off exploring photography and video in elementary school, which allowed me to explore my creative vision. My mother, who was my biggest fan and supporter in everything I did, played a major role in me pursuing my musical passions by getting me my first Macbook in 7th grade, and recording set in 11th grade. Since then I’ve been producing, writing, and recording music. Now I operate under my multi-media brand and company, Byrd Media.
Being myself 100% is essential to not only my art, but my livelihood. My goal is to let others know that no mater what limitations people try to put you in, you be who YOU want to be. If you want to sing, sing. If you want to dance, dance. Doesn’t matter if you’re black/white or 100lbs/300lbs. I don’t like to just follow trends or do things that everyone else deems as “acceptable”. Instead of being a needle I aim to be a brick in the haystack. Paving my own way by any means. Even if that means being ridiculed. God’s purpose for you is always going to be bigger.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When my mother passed away in 2018, my entire world was shattered. Knowing that my main source of unconditional love and support was now physically gone devastated me, and left me dumbfounded. I had to convince myself that my goals and all the values my momma instilled in me were worth continuing to pursue full throttle. Being 17 and just now realizing what I want to do with my life, I needed to push through. If it wasn’t for my grandmother, I don’t know where I would’ve ended up as lost as I was at 17.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is freedom. No matter if people agree with it or care for it, being creative allows you to freely express who you really are when you ignore the judgement. Art is a gift from God for humans to show their souls.
