Hi Quentin, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
FFL Athletics is a sustainable athleisure startup catering to men, women, and children, who are committed to living a fit life. A profound realization dawned upon me as I observed the landscape of popular fitness brands: a conspicuous absence of sustainability in their material choices and a dearth of elegance in their designs left me dissatisfied. In response, I envisioned a fitness line that not only embraced sustainable materials like organic cotton and viscose bamboo but also exuded simplicity and elegance. Jeff Bezos, the former CEO of Amazon, did an interview on the David Rubenstein show where he stated it is the things you don’t do that end up haunting you. I want to be able to look back on my life as a senior citizen and have minimal regrets in business and life. While I may not have unearthed a unique problem to solve, my mission is to encourage consumers to scrutinize their purchases, urging them to choose products that seamlessly blend aesthetic allure with a commitment to sustainable practices. In the pursuit of this vision, I am passionate about creating fitness apparel that not only motivates individuals psychologically to maintain their fitness journey but also contributes positively to the well-being of our environment.

I grew up in San Diego, CA, and graduated from Torrey Pines High School and finished my undergraduate degree in business at Whitter College, and earned a master’s degree in healthcare at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. My fitness journey started as an emaciated freshman at Whittier College. I was not happy with my body and wanted a ripped physique. The hard work and dedication in the gym paid dividends for me in my junior and senior years of college. What separates me from others is a passion for my craft, a relentless work ethic, and the ability to learn from my mistakes. I am most proud of earning undergraduate and graduate degrees. Education is a credential that no one can take from you.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategies for growing my clientele have been networking and developing a marketing plan to increase my client base. For example, I have organized photo shoots with fitness ambassadors to build brand awareness. Also, participating in the Phoenix Fashion Week meetup group to network with other business owners, models, photographers, and makeup artists. I carry a clipboard in my laptop bag to gather names, e-mail addresses, and if the potential customer is interested in men’s women’s, or children’s fitness. The goal here is to utilize e-mail and social media marketing by building a robust e-mail list to send targeted campaigns and promotions. I have utilized social media platforms to engage with followers and share visually appealing content that showcases the products and the brand’s sustainability efforts.
Furthermore, creating educational and informative content such as blog posts, videos, and infographics to educate consumers on sustainable fashion and the impact of purchasing decisions on the environment. Lastly, continuously track and measure the success of the marketing initiatives and make adjustments as needed to ensure maximum impact and ROI.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I have a day job which allows me to fund my fitness startup. I meticulously keep track of my income and expenses in an excel spreadsheet.
