We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Quenequia Graves a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Quenequia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I believe it takes a lot of self-discipline and consistency. Self-denial in terms of allowing feelings of fear or inadequacy to get in the way of getting you to the place you define as successful. Building solid relationships on firm foundations. Lastly, and most cliché, a lot of hard work.
Quenequia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a guitarist and artist here in South Florida. I am contracted to play for various artists and/or companies as needed. I am also a session guitarist and producer.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Absolutely. What helped me build my social media was consistent posting of content over the years across multiple social media platforms. Being a guitarist I would post videos of myself playing to a loop I made or me playing in a church service or playing over a cover tune. Consistently. One video that I posted of myself playing in a church service got a lot of views on Facebook which led to me connecting with a lot of people. Then instagram happened and a lot of those connections migrated to instagram. Ultimately posts on instagram led to connections that led to shows. So to those of you who are looking to build your platform, the most important thing that I would suggest in my opinion would be to be consistent in posting content and be consistent in the type of content that you’re posting.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Yes. I started out playing the guitar in church and as I got older and more serious about playing, I wanted to expand my gift. The church I started out playing in was the most amazing church family. They were encouraging with words and actions even after my departure from their ministry. I left looking to challenge myself more and ended up at another great ministry but I found myself stuck and after about two years I had to make a decision to pivot to another ministry where I knew my ability to deal with critique and the pressure to be my best would be applied heavily. Not without my will to be better being challenged. However, it has led to tremendous growth and I do not regret the pivot.
