We recently connected with Queen Maya L and have shared our conversation below.
Queen Maya , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I remember so vividly the day I said to myself, “I’m going to be a singer,” I was eight years old, standing in front of my grandmother’s house full of determination. I made it my mission to practice. I started having “concerts” on my front steps. I sang every single day and practiced my dance steps in front of the mirror. Little did I know was how much this would pay off much less prepare me for a career in education.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a multidisciplinary artist, I’ve been within the entertainment industry for over 16 years as a performer, composer, director, producer, and educator. I found a way to blend the melodic memories of the past into the modern world, creating an unforgettable experience.
I began my teaching career at 13 as a student instructor alongside her Vocal Coach, Chrissie Loftus at the Music and Mentorship Program of Philadelphia. Once in high school, I started the school’s first glee club, Vibrato. I spent 8 years performing at dozens of venues around the city further mastering my performance skills. This Philadelphia native set her sights on Boston as I furthered my music education at Berklee College of Music. In my final year, I produced my first full-length album, Unravel which was released in November 2018. I also released a three-song acoustic EP, Welcome Back To Love featuring songs from Unravel. My sophomore project, Transitions released in October 2019. Most recently, I released Soul Ties, a four-song EP accompanied by a short film.
In 2018 this Renaissance woman found a way to integrate the arts with a holistic approach to healthy living. I created Intertwined Entertainment, an arts-centered holistic wellness company. I strive to continue to curate safe environments for art/emotional expression, aromatherapy, and herbal solutions. What sets her apart from other wellness brands is the extensive knowledge of what it takes to be creative and what is needed to heal. I am most proud when I hear from clients how what I create helps them in some way whether it’s tea, performance training, or candles it fills me with joy.
I aid people in their effort to put their overall well-being at the forefront of their lives. I offer small but impactful ways for people to live their best creative lives. Music is the one thing that unites people through all cultures, languages, and backgrounds. I understand that music and the arts are imperative for our survival. Intertwined Entertainment creates healing tools for you to thrive, entertainment so you can vibe, and extra love so you survive.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I feel one of the biggest things I am constantly unlearning is not asking for help. As a person who likes to be in control, at the moment it seems “easier” to do everything yourself but that almost always leads to burnout. I have had multiple instances where I have been overwhelmed beyond belief because I didn’t utilize my resources and reach out to others in my field. My second short film, Soul Ties was one of the first times I really reached out to my network and wound up having a successful viewing where I could just be an artist. More often than not, asking for assistance, even if it’s just advice can have a huge impact on your situation.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I have a connective tissue disorder known as EDS. I have lived with chronic pain since I was 14. There have been many instances where I have had to fight through unbearable pain to perform or create. It’s one of the main reasons I got into holistic care at all. I knew that part of my purpose is to share my voice and light to this world and to do so I had to learn how to care for myself in ways that most don’t have to think about. This includes types of training that accommodate my not-so able body. When I am on stage, I feel no pain, it’s always been like that. The moment I step off is a completely different story, which means I have to listen to my body’s needs. Recently, I performed at the 25th anniversary of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill with a debilitating pain migraine, and in show biz, the show must go on. So for 7 hours from sound check to the end I showed up and sang my soul, not only for contractional l reasons but because I love what I do; without it, I don’t see a need to fight for anything. My art and soul are forever intertwined.
