We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Quanishia Dixon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Quanishia below.
Quanishia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
When I started my business, I was making stuff every week and gave it to different people for free. You’re probably thinking for free. Yes for free, I felt like how can I get people to buy my treats if no one other than my family has ever tasted my product? I did that for about two months. Doing that for two months I received a lot of feedback on what was good and what needed to be fixed, Once I perfected those things I was ready to start selling my treats. Not long after that, I received my very first order for a whole two-layer chocolate cake.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hey yall I’m Nishia, Originally born and raised in Atlanta, GA. I picked up my interest in baking as a child watching my great-grandmother bake cakes from scratch. My great-grandmother made it clear that you needed to learn how to do something, and it was baking for me. If something didn’t come out right she would throw the whole thing away and make me start over. At the time I thought that was the meanest thing ever, but as I got older I realized that that was a valuable lesson she taught me by doing that. When I was in High School I joined an organization called FCCLA. We would go to Athens, GA, and compete in different competitions against another high schools all around GA. Of course, I competed in the baking competition. One year I dropped the ball because I forgot all of my key ingredients and let’s just say I had to make do with what I did have, which wasn’t too much. Everything was done and it was time to set up the display, my presentation had nothing on what I saw the other schools do. I thought let me hurry and put this on the table and get out of here. The night came when they announced the winners and I could see the anticipation on my teacher’s face like she just knew we won all competitions, and I was thinking little do she know the baking competition was one we were for sure not going to win. After the results came out and she received results she told me that we lost by a couple of points in baking. At that moment I knew I had to be pretty good considering I was missing key ingredients. After I graduated high school I would bake things here and there but never for sale and I never had the thought to start a business. It wasn’t until 2020 that I decided to put my talent to use and start a business, and here we are.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe me stepping outside of my comfort zone and talking to people about what I have to offer, perfecting my craft by taking suggestions on what I was lacking, and the major thing I think is having good customer service and making sure each customer I get is satisfied and knows how much I appreciate their business.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
So I have a reward system, for every dollar spent my customers receive 2 points and for every 250 points and they receive 50 points just for signing up on the website. They receive $5 off or they have the option to let them build up to get free items. My customers also receive emails when a new item is rolling, if something is going on with Hi Sa’Weetness, and to remind them of the number of points they have.
