We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Moni Meish. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Moni Meish below.
Moni Meish, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Learning how to create music has been the highlight of who I am as a person. I now understand when people say that music saved their lives. Before music, I always considered myself as a creative and tried different things. I’ve made nail polish, I’ve made accessories, I’ve done nails and hair. Nothing quite compares to making music.
It feels that I am excelling at a fast rate in this field and the worst part for me is when I am in the studio and I don’t know the lingo. I was told to “pocket’ and I was just so lost because I didn’t know what to do. I ran away from it because I was scared of doing it wrong. However, I have learned that in this musical world, you can make anything your own, but, a major but, you should learn the basics.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
1. My name is Moni Meish and I am a Creative Artist from New York City.
2. I’ve always had an interest in music because some songs just did something to you that I couldn’t explain at a young age. Listening to Whitney Houston made me feel good. I used to sit by the radio and wait for Renee (Lost Boyz) to come on the radio. I was on the train when I first heard Jay Z and Nas. Before these two mega artists, I was listening to Brittany Spears.
A few thing happened in between but lets fast forward to about 2019 when I had surgery on my throat. I was told I could die in my sleep because of my Thyroid. At that time I thought how horrible it would be if I never spoke again. I had to speak. Due to my upbringing, I needed people to know that they weren’t alone. My friend, Erick Jhon, was working on his EP and he asked me to rap a verse. I stayed up all night with my cat writing my first official rhyme and I have been going ever since then. My goal is to share my experiences so that I can provide an ‘audio hug’ that makes the listener feel like they are part of an experience.
3. What sets me aside from other artists is the route that I am taking to be in this industry. In college I majored in theatre and minored in journalism. I’ve studied acting, playwriting, the history or theatre and focused on costume design. In journalism, I did college radio and started my podcast titled “The Museum Of My Mind.” I’ve interviewed people about subjects ranging from food insecurity to hurricanes in Puerto Rico. When it comes to my music, I am bringing my personal life and my education to put it on display. I am the perfect mix of a Long Island suburbs girl to The Bronx Chick with my African American Vernacular. What sets me aside is the fact that I’m not that perfect box that most artists fit into. Musically I’m giving you Hardcore to Pop Rock mixed with my love of musical theatre. You don’t know what’s next from Moni Meish.
4. I am most proud of how I have grown as a performer. My stage presence is something that you feel and will remember. My goal is to perform a minimum of twice a month and I have surpassed that goal. The main places that I have performed at have been so great for me that people now request me. It gives me that special feeling that I’m doing something right. People recognize me and often know my work before they personally meet me.
5. I want fans to know that they aren’t alone. I have mental health issues, I was in foster care and I often feel lonely. Ideally, we can be alone together because of the music.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social Media is a living tool that can make of break you. The best advice I got from social media (from a guy named Dorien) is to “post even when you are ugly.” This was important because I started to post at different times about a million things. For example, if you just woke up you can post a good morning reel. Other topics I have posted about include the following: Cycling on my Peloton (@MoniMeish), new foods, celibacy, shopping hauls. When I started I had no content, so I had to make some.
Now that I am a little over two and a half years in I am sifting through whats online and deciding what to keep and what no longer serves me. People won’t know that you exist until you tell them that you exist.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
You don’t have to wait until an artist is rich and famous to support them. I suggest that society starts at the things that are free, because the saying is that “the best things in life are free.”
1. Like the artist’s picture/reel
2. Stream their music
3. Leave a Comment (more than 5 words)
4. Drop an emoji
Too often in this modern age it feels like us artists get the most support from someone that we don’t know across the globe. The love should start at home.
