We recently connected with Qimmah Burgess and have shared our conversation below.
Qimmah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
By creating Pillow Talk with the Tea I wanted to give back to others by giving them a dose of how I grew up in an Open, Truthful, Candid, and Unguarded environment that continuously doesn’t have any hesitation in showing me the importance of open communication, freely speaking my mind, openly discussing how I felt and what was on my mind without any judgment along with providing the importance of emotional intelligence. As I have had many in my village and in my tribe to guide me, love me, support me, love on me, and pour into me, the most important person who’ve shoulders I stand on is my grandmother “Essie Mae Burgess” I had to tape into the innovational spirit of the women who raised and inspired me to be those same things I inspire and encourage others to be. My grandmother “Essie Mae Burgess” inspired and motivated others, and cared for, loved, and supported everyone she came within reach. She empowered and lifted her family to be the best version of themselves and pushed them to be bold, courageous, stylish, creative, and daring. Her vibrant personality and energy are what inspired me to be just that as she was. And of course, I cannot forget my best friend, my grandfather “Ralph Flowers” who also empowered the women you see before you, with the never back down courageous, the fight mentality and the “I Stay Ready so I never have to get ready” spirit. So if you’re bold, fearless, and ready to have that candid, your truth and judge free uncomfortable conversation.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Qimmah (Quah-mi-iah) M. Burgess, I’m from the garden state of New Jersey but for those that don’t know how to pronounce my name, you can call me Q, Quah, or Queen. I’m the Founder, CEO, Creator and Host of Pillow Talk with the Tea Podcast, Founder of EmpowerHer Tribenation, Host, Curve/Plus Size Model, Emcee, Serial Entrepreneur, a Curvy Ambassador “Body Positivity”, Self Love Confidence Coach, and an Inspirational & Motivational Speaker. I’ve created my brands to inspire, motivate and encourage others to be the best versions of themselves. In many ways, they dare to discover new opportunities for themselves, create something like nothing before within themselves, motivate themselves to find new ways to do things differently, and be truthful to themselves knowing that the healing begins with the uncomfortable conversations.
And in addition, I have founded EmpowerHer Tribenation where I live, stand, and move in the action of “I am my Sister’s Keeper” by helping and assisting women in founding their voice, igniting and reigniting their conference and sparking their boundaries and standards for themselves, so until they can stand on there own I say “My sister you can borrow some of mine”.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Being a survivor of domestic abuse from my high school sweet heart who is also the father of my son. I’ve experienced a sweet romantic life with him, at first, and then things went sour really fast after the birth of our son. This moment being the most toxic and abusive time in my life. After planning to have a baby as a young couple, I didn’t foresee the abuse or my life taking such a drastic turn and one that I had to make a decision to leave and now to be a single parent that I didn’t planned to be. After having enough and being reminded of a family member who didn’t survive domestic violence, I was able muster the strength to get up and get out and get away from the abusive relationship. Although I’ve experienced abuse and trauma, I SURVIVED! And as a survivor, I take advantaged of my choices today. My story took a major turn when I’ve made the decision to begin to work on myself and to heal, within my healing journey that’s where the light, resilience and fire ignited within me and where ‘Pillow Talk with the Tea’ was born. ‘Pillow Talk with the Tea’ is an unapologetic podcast that has various topics that covers many uncomfortable conversations.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
As I always state “This is my Passion, not my Hobby” Helping and assisting others is my heart and a deep passion for me to innovate others to be bold, daring, and courageous. Empowering others to transition themselves into being the best version of themselves, I liberate, educate and encourage them to know the importance of the elements of the mind, body, spirit, and relationships (with self) when it comes to aspects of health, wealth, transitioning, growth and in the healing of the uncomfortable conversations. So, that’s why I also created Pillow Talk with the Tea Podcast to provide a forum for others to have an Open, Truthful, Candid conversation in a judgment-free environment with an old-school family vibe of that straightforward kitchen table conversation.
