We were lucky to catch up with Qimeng Chang recently and have shared our conversation below.
Qimeng, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I would say I did wonder a lot about what would it be like if I studied something else and what if I am doing office work now everyday. I would say both paths would make me happy. Because I believe it is not the work that makes you unhappy or happy, it is yourself, your perspective and attitude. I always try to find some small enlightenment for every work, and I would always try my best for the work. I found way too much enlightenment in music, that is one of the reason why I chose music as my career, Therefore, just be happy, don’t try to refuse everything, you might can do everything.
Qimeng, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Qimeng Chang, also known as Charmy. My home country is China. I went to New Zealand for schools since 13 then moved to United States for Musicians Institute. So I believe I have quite a diversity of culture affecting me in my music path.
I love Jazz, Funk and R&B. I released one of my Bossa song on different Chinese platforms, and I’m planning to release it on the US market as soon as possible. I also have more music coming up!
PLUS!: I’m also pursuing my Master’s degree in Music Business currently, I have helped many of my musicians friends on booking and marketing.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I have a few thousand audience on different Chinese Platforms.
I would say the best way to gain followers and audiences is to upload regularly, upload daily or weekly or twice a week, this way you could have a good data on your page. Platforms calculation would know that you are a “very active” content creator, thus giving your post more traffic flows.
Metadata is very important as well, based on my experience as a marketing intern and an agent, contents are related to other contents, when audiences are interested in one of them, they will see more contents relating to it. Therefore, know how to add your hashtags, use the right title and collaborate with the same genre creator would be very helpful for gaining more audiences and fans.
These advices are good for starters as well!
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
As working as a singer songwriter and a freelance artists manager myself, I would say booking agents are very helpful if you choose the right one. Live shows and events are one of the best ways to gain more audiences and develop your portfolio, especially bigger shows or shows with bigger exposure.
If I’ve known the role of booking agents earlier, I believe I could have so much more performing opportunities. I have musicians friends that have great booking agents performing and selling tickets every weekends. How nice!
So if you are a performing artist, don’t hesitate to know more about booking agents and maybe try to get one.
