We recently connected with Qian Wan and have shared our conversation below.
Qian, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Long story in short, I graduated from Calarts in 2020 during the COVID-19 outbreak. All industries are at a standstill mood. People seem to be isolating at home. After three month, I decided to return to my country to reunite with my family. Soon I found my first job after graduation. During more than a year of working in this company, I participated in the Winter Olympics Torch Relay Project, Beijing New Year Countdown Celebration, etc. I learned a lot while going through these international and national projects. I am very happy that in 2022, I started my own studio. We mainly do promotional activities for performances. Now our company’s business is gradually enriching and gradually expanding into art & design. In the future I hope my company can develop international business between the United States and China. Ultimately, I hope that through our efforts, we can achieve international cultural exchanges and interactions, promote excellent cultures among different countries, and learn from the excellent cultures of each country.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I see myself as a business woman, production designer, art director and scenic artist. I worked as a scenic artist in China for seven years. In 2018, I jumped in to Calarts to study Applied arts (a MFA program), During my time at school, I developed a strong interest in film, participating in USC’s thesis film and working on Universal Studios’ Halloween project during the summer. These different work experiences have made my view of life continue to expand. During the epidemic, I returned to China and participated in projects such as the New Year count down event and the ignition ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics, which allowed me to learn a lot of management knowledge beyond design. In 2022, I started my own company. Our clients are from all over the world. Through communicating with people from different countries, I learned about the diversity of cultures in different countries. I think I have grown a lot in the past few years of work and study. I hope that in the future, as the company’s business continues to grow, we will always remind ourselves to continue to learn from people with different and cultures backgrounds.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
In fact, the difference between going to school and working is very big. I believe it’s completely different. Being an entrepreneur also has a completely different way of thinking than employee. As a student, it was more like a solo sport. Your main goal is to study your major well and get a good GPA. But during at work, you focused more on teamwork and working with a group of people, it’s very important to work as a group. But when you start a business, it’s more important to connect with your customer base. Set goals and general direction. Although I’m speaking in layman’s terms now, this is something I very much wish I’d known when I was a student.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Cho Tak Wong’s memoir.
Innate genetic genes and family education; acquired intentions and good character; thirdly, it is a matter of catching up with the trend of the times, government support, and good times.
Only when you work hard can you get things done well and gain more and more trust and support; character is the way, and all kinds of “high emotional intelligence” are just techniques. On the premise of good character, “high emotional intelligence” can be the icing on the cake and achieve success. Great cause, otherwise it will be just a matter of chance and a short-lived flash in the pan. Because if your character is not upright, “high emotional intelligence” can only deceive you for a while, but it will never deceive you forever.
If you have a good character and a good heart, you will have friends all over the world. There will be people who help you everywhere, and your career will be more likely to succeed. In addition, if you are born at the right time, you can go with the trend, so that you can get what you want, achieve yourself as a person, and become a person.
