Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Q. Martelle. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Martelle, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you as a business owner?
The majority of my workforce background is retail management. I’ve always loved the structure of running a team and time management. I’m really big on working smarter not harder and playing to your strengths.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been a natural hair stylist going on 8 years now. I remember being told in cosmetology school that I wouldn’t be able to create a brand that only focused on natural hair. That’s what sets me apart from a lot of other stylists. I don’t “do” natural hair I am a natural hair stylist, there’s a big difference. In my salon I create a calm private setting for my clients. I purposely don’t have a TV; there’s enough noise in the day. I don’t overbook my days, that’s very important to me and I my clients appreciate that. Sometimes we laugh and cut up or sometimes clients may want a quiet service and I appreciate both. I love seeing my clients smile after the service but even more important, I love educating my clients on healthy hair techniques and practices. I want them to be comfortable with thier hair in and out of the salon.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My reputation is based off my clientele. Because of my business background I admit I run a tight ship, lol. I am a big communicator. I send out monthly newsletters and emails outlining salon policies and updates. I also am the type of person who starts on time. Time is a precious commodity that shouldn’t be wasted. These are just some of the things that my clients tell me they appreciate and why they continue to refer new clients.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I made sure my content posts are consistent. You make a better impact that way because IG is consistently feeding new images and stories. I also keep my business page a true business page. Clients want to see the work. When posting images, I make sure they’re good quality. I always show my process in a clean and inviting space. Oh and I always make sure my camera lens is clean, lol.
