We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Pxpi Ak. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Pxpi below.
Pxpi , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I started making music in 2018 my senior year of high school and a close friend of mine at the time made beats. One day we were freestyling joking around to one of the beats he made and I just belted out this raspy grunge voice and from then on learned how to control it! I don’t know what I really could of done to speed this process up other than just practice and making music everyday, a lot of times you don’t know your getting better until you listen to your own progression of your catalog and the excitement it brings you. I wouldn’t say I needed a skill to get to this level I’d say I needed a willingness to just be consistent on writing consistently and learning constantly. I think the only obstacle in my way is just learning how to grow with the world but in my own direction, as time goes by music changes, promotion changes , and for me goals change as well so adapting to the game constantly while still being myself to me is the hardest part.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I split off from a small group I started with in late 2018, that left me clueless on how to record, where to record , and what I even wanted to sound like. I bounced from studio to studio until I landed with FreeYslfStudios and created a massive reIationship with him and developing my sound. I locally went to studios and built relationships with engineers and other artists in my community then started performing for some of the DJ’s at local clubs. I then started having local people invest in me and my career as I went on to do twitch livestream music tournaments and just getting my music reviewed daily! Caught me so much buzz from both in my area and on the internet I was signed at the time to a management company. Where I went on to work with Stafford Beats, Khemics and Internet Money, SoundCloud Distribution , Equity of Roc Nation and many more companies. I consistently stayed in the studio and consistently flew to Orlando where I worked hand in hand with StaffordBeats at his UnderGround Retreats. I started to notice I stood out from other artist when audiences would question why my name was ‘Pxpi AK’ when I identify as a female. But as they were questioning they didn’t seem to care about my gender they were just amazed that they enjoyed my music as much as they did. With hard punchlines, dark beats inspired by Travis Scott , and a moving emotional vibe with a raspy voice all in one I noticed how I could excel in what I had if I put more work into it and I did just that. I am most proud of the fact that people from all over listen and relate to my music and they message me about it on a daily basis when I’m from a small town in georgia thinking I’d never get out of there. My message to anyone wanting to do anything, it can always be you, you can choose yourself and it be okay. You live your life for yourself and no one else. The main thing id want people to know about me is that I have a life story for just about anything and I have plenty to say for years to come.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I truly don’t do this for anything but the love of it. As much money as I invest out of my hard earned cash for sometimes a couple hundred people to hear what I worked on for weeks at a time is all worth it for me. And I do it over and over and will continue to until I can no longer. I do this for the heavy hearts and the people who just need to let out emotion.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2021 i ended a relationship with my management label, I left a horrible long term relationship and I had no money nor any place to live. I called everyone I knew I borrowed money and continued to make music. I finally got into a better financial situation was able to pay my debts and within a year with my persistence I got a phone call from a streamer I watched for multiple years inviting me on stream for a chance to play my music for Shaquille O’Neal! Shaq was impressed enough by my music I was 1/5 artist gifted $1000 from him! I couldn’t be more thankful from what I came from to what I have now
